MY MOM AS A
YOUNG GIRL
Tonight, 9/22/99, I took out a photo album from 1983 when I had gone to Hawaii with my mother. It was not the first time we had gone to Hawaii, but this trip was poignant in that we more or less "rushed" to get there because we had just found out Mom was going to lose her sight, slowly but surely.
My mother was then 79 years old. Today she is 95 and semi-comatose, unable to communicate obviously, and blind. Her eyes haven't opened in a year.
The above pictures are the only photos I have of my mom that are up on the web, where even aging me can see them more clearly than actually looking at the photo itself.
I am going to take some of the Hawaii photos of my mother and have some of them scanned and put up on web pages.
The year 1983, when Mom was 79, was the last year she lived pain free and truly able to enjoy life. For the past 16 years my mother has been fighting a warrior's battle to remain alive despite all odds.
I am proud to call this lady my mother; I treasure every good time we had together and treasure also, the not so good times. There are many people struggling as is my mother. May G-d, in His mercy, soothe all those in nursing homes, look after them, and take them to Paradise to dance with the Angels according to His time plan. People such as my mother, the great-grandmother of the children seen above, were once viable, thinking individuals. They in part, formed our values and the world we now are living in. We are their legacy. They are part of the circle of life. These people are our history.
