KNOW YOUR VALUES

Everybody says it's important to have values,

but what about the values on a chessboard?

It's like this: pawns are the greatest in number,

so they have the least value, or one point.

Next, the knight and bishop are valued at three points,

rooks are said to be worth five points,

queens worth nine points,

and even though the king is never actually traded,

it's the most valuable piece of all.

The point of assigning values is to give you a basic exchange rate

when swapping pieces during the game.

If you trade both a knight and bishop for a rook and pawn,

it's a trade of six points for six points.

Never make an exchange in which your opponent gets more points than you do,

and you'll be considered a very knowledgeable player.
