Holding Back the Sea

for Amy & Ani

"here's the caution tape," i say
handing it over to another little goddess
(she was the brains and the brawn
and i the almost as pretty face tagging along)
we were just two girls trying to hold back the sea
thousands of excited fans who would charge readily
waves of faces ready
to splash against us as we pretended to be rocks
i said part, and after a few minutes they did
now if that ain't the biggest ego boost i don't know what is
there we were two piers
invincible, attached with a line yellow chain
she smaller but sturdier stared the fishes down
i swayed with the waters and gave the attempting escapists a frown
and once again the happy punk graces the stage
and I feel my heart and adrenaline raise
"don't mind me, now might be the time to run up and down that center isle,"
"that's not fucking funny Ani," Amy say's as we grip our cord tighter,
and her teeth grate into a smile
praying her words don't start a hurricane or tornado,
praying we don't get drowned here at the bottom of the sea
i wonder where did these 5'2" girls sprout shoulders from?
there determination and beauty, they walk by mystifying me
and here we are standing hands clasped
and "they are coming for us and there are gonna be mad
they are gonna wanna know how we got in here and
they are gonna wanna now how we plan to get out,"
and i start screaming "up, up, up, up, up, up, and around,"
amazes by the fact that we survived and didn't drown
even in the end with girls hanging off my out stretched arm
i just gripped Amy's hand tighter an she pulled me through
and we were those little bitches with that little yellow piece of string
and on behalf of both of us I'd like to thank you for listening
