Jon Pertwee's Companions

For most of the Doctor's third incarnation he was stranded on Earth, unable to use his TARDIS. He worked with UNIT durring this time, therefore, all but one of his companions are members of UNIT.

Elizabeth Shaw (Caroline John)

Elizabeth "Liz" Shaw was a scientist, loosely connected to UNIT. Her first episode, Spearhead From Space, was also Pertwee's first episode. She wanted nothing to do with the Doctor or UNIT at first and even after seeing aliens trying to take over the planet, she still didn't believe in time travel or that sort of thing. Her scientific, rational, calm way of looking at the world contrasted sharply with the Doctor's halp-hazzard, throw-your-self-into-trouble-and-hope-later-you-can-get-out-of-it style. Liz had to be convinced of everything with proof. Kinda like Mulder and Scully on X-Files, only without the sappy love-story in the background.
Unfortunatlly, having a really smart companion who knew scientific jargon almost as well as the Doc. did not leave much room for "What does that mean, Doctor?" questions and they (the big, mysterious "THEY") decided that she had to go after only one season. She left between The Inferno and Terror of the Autons. (They didn't even give her a decent send-off. Just said, "She had to leave." Grrr.)

Josephine Grant (Katy Manning)

Josephine Grant was the neice of some guy who was very high up in UNIT. She used her connections to get a job as an assistant with the Doctor. The Doc. wasn't very happy about it, but he didn't have the heart to tell her she was going to have to go. (Soft hearted, as always...) Jo. was such an opptimist and always so full of energy that sometimes you weren't sure weather you wanted to hug her and tell her how great you thought she was for always managing to be up-beat, or to wring her neck just to get her to shut her trap. Guess it kind of depends on the mood you're in while you watch the show. She left UNIT and the Doctor when she decided to marry a man she met durring the course of The Green Death.

Sara Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen)

Sara Jane Smith was a reporter who was VERY into "Women's Lib." I think she might have been with the Doctor longer than any other companion, but I'm not sure about this. Unfortunatly, like so many of the Doc.'s companions, she had weak ankles... But she was pretty tough otherwize. I mean, let's face it, a lot of stuff happened to this girl. She was shot at, hypnotized, asphyxiated, prepared for ritual sacrifice... Oh wait! Most of the Doctor's female companions were prepared for ritual sacrifice...She was tortured, harased by bug eyed monsters, drugged, kidnapped, and even had an evil android modled after her. Shiesh. She was also one of the best companions (I think) that the Doctor ever had. She left at the end of The Hand of Fear.
