Amuro was the main pilot of the Federation's new Mobile Suit known as the Gundam. At first, Amuro didn't know much about the Gundam, but slowly became better with it. Experience helped him in battle, and allowed him to manifest his Newtype powers, which took the Gundam beyond it's limits. The Gundam was designed as a fast, close-combat mobile suit and was the first to feature several new technologies, including the energy cap-based beam rifle and beam saber. When Amuro bright the Gundam beyon its limits, it gained the often-annoying result of the Gundam's motors and joints getting burned-out or overloaded simply because it couldn't keep up with Amuro's reflexes. Later, the Gundam was modified to keep up with Amuro.

During the Gryps War against the Titans, Amuro Ray, member of Kalaba needed a Mobile Suit. They gave him the Dijeh, a powerful Mobile Suit designed from Rick Dias. Amuro used it to back up Kalaba and the AEUG during the raid on Jaburo and the Titan's mountain base.
