Emerald Society News

A short note to keep you abreast of things Emerald

First and foremost, in our previous newsletter, I was seriously remiss not to have mentioned and heartily congratulated our own Vice President, Mr. Thomas Murphy, on his appointment as Head of School of M723. Tom is yet another Home Instruction alumnus whose supervisory skills, honed under the keen eye of past-president Dr. John Reehill, targeted him to head one of our special schools.

Annual Christmas Party- Wednesday December 13th at the famous Rory Dolan's, McClean Avenue, Yonkers (914)776-2946. Please plan to attend and bring a friend. Full hot and cold buffer, open bar, DJ / Dancing, and the gloriously decorated Kilshandra Room will not fail to gladden your hearts and help kindle the spirit of the season. All for $42.00. Make your plans now.

Other News

For the second time in the past four years, your Emerald Society marchers were recognized by the St. Patrick's Parade Committee for their sterling presence and intelligent bearing as they briskly strode up Fifth Avenue last March 17th. We were awarded 2nd Place among all non-uniformed Emerald Societies in the 1999 parade. Remember, this year's Parade falls on a Saturday. It would be heartening to see an even stringer contingent march this year. That should make our post-parade reception all the merrier...It was good to see many fellow Emeralds at the Welcome back Party last month at Rory Dolan's. Joining the many new and retired Emerald members was Senator Guy Vellela, a long-standing supporter of Irish affairs and of the Emerald Society ...Also present, just off the plane from Sydney, was the Republic of Ireland's (& your Emerald Society's) Olympic representative, Ireland's champion hammerthrower, Patrick McGrath...Paddy teaches adaptive physical education at the Bronx School for Career Development... At this time, the Awardees for the Scholarship Dinner Dance are being finalized. Our next letter will have all the details. For now, mark your calendars for Friday, March 2, 2001, at Terrace-On-the Park in Flushing Meadow Park, Queens...The Emerald Society has contracted the services of a "webmaster" who will hopefully be able to shorten our address.

Coming Events

On Friday, November 17th at Durow's in Queens, the Grand Council of United Emerald Societies will hold their annual Dinner Dance. The awardees this year are Msgr. Thomas P. Leonard and the Honorable Mario Biaggi. Tickets are $65 and can be purchased at the door.

2nd Annual Ireland Trip CIE tour; ten days-February 16 to February 25, 2001 $1095 (less $175 for last year's participants). Arrive Dublin, visit Belfast, Donegal, & Galway. Depart Shannon. Last year's tour was great fun. This promises to be even better. Call Mike Burke (914)747-1673, or Barney Ferguson (914)738-4603.
