SNOWSTORM

JANUARY 20,2000

Since Sunday, January 16th, there had been talk of snow on Thursday, the 20th. It didn't look like much, until Wednesday, the 19th. I thought 2-4 inches.

This is what the NWS had to say Wednesday afternoon.

WEATHER MAP DISCUSSION FOR EXTREME SOUTHEASTERN NEW YORK... NORTHEASTERN NEW JERSEY AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY 408 PM EST WED JAN 19 2000
...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH FOR THURSDAY FOR SUFFOLK COUNTY NEW YORK...
LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE OUT OF THE CENTRAL PLAINS AND JUMP TO THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST BY THURSDAY MORNING. THIS LOW WILL INTENSIFY QUICKLY AS IT MOVES NORTHEAST TO THE GULF OF MAINE BY FRIDAY MORNING.
WITH A VERY COLD AIRMASS STILL IN PLACE ACROSS THE REGION...ALL OF THE PRECIPITATION WITH THIS STORM IS EXPECTED TO BE IN THE FORM OF SNOW. LIGHT SNOW OR FLURRIES WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE REGION TOWARD DAYBREAK THURSDAY MORNING. SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE DAY THURSDAY WITH THE HEAVIEST SNOW EXPECTED FROM LATE MORNING THROUGH THE AFTERNOON...ESPECIALLY ACROSS EASTERN LONG ISLAND.
BEGINNING LATE THURSDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUING INTO FRIDAY...THE WEATHER STORY WILL SHIFT FROM SNOW TO WIND AND COLD. MUCH COLDER AIR WILL RETURN TO THE AREA LATE THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY BEHIND THE STORM ON A VERY GUSTY NORTHWEST WIND. WIND CHILLS ON FRIDAY WILL DROP TO AT LEAST THE 10 TO 20 BELOW ZERO RANGE...AND WILL LIKELY GO EVEN LOWER FRIDAY NIGHT AS TEMPERATURES DROP TO THE TEENS AND SINGLE NUMBERS.

I wasn't too sure of this, but did raise my estimate for amounts. Now I said 2-4 Nassau, 3-6 Suffolk. Mistake. Should have stayed with what I had said.

Later that evening the NWS was saying the following...

WEATHER MAP DISCUSSION FOR EXTREME SOUTHEASTERN NEW YORK... NORTHEASTERN NEW JERSEY AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY 1015 PM EST WED JAN 19 2000
...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SUFFOLK COUNTY LONG ISLAND AND PORTIONS OF SOUTHEASTERN CONNECTICUT. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW HAS BEEN POSTED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE TRI-STATE REGION...
A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING OUT OF THE CENTRAL PLAINS THIS EVENING WILL BASICALLY JUMP TO THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST BY THURSDAY MORNING. THIS LOW WILL INTENSIFY VERY RAPIDLY INTO A MAJOR WINTER STORM AS IT MOVES NORTHEAST TO THE GULF OF MAINE BY FRIDAY MORNING.
WITH A VERY COLD AIRMASS STILL IN PLACE ACROSS THE REGION...ALL OF THE PRECIPITATION WITH THIS STORM IS EXPECTED TO BE IN THE FORM OF SNOW. LIGHT SNOW OR FLURRIES SHOULD DEVELOP ACROSS OUR REGION TOWARD DAYBREAK THURSDAY MORNING. SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY WITH A GOOD CHANCE OF SOME HEAVY SNOW AT TIMES DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS...ESPECIALLY IN THE WARNED AREA.
THE SNOW WILL END FROM WEST TO EAST AFTER MIDNIGHT. TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO RANGE BETWEEN 6 AND 8 INCHES IN THE WARNED AREA AND BETWEEN 3 AND 5 ELSEWHERE....

Things were looking worse, so I kicked my estimates up again: Nassau 3-5; Western Suffolk 4-6; Eastern Suffolk 6-8 & maybe more. Should have stayed with what I had said earlier in the day, 2-4 inches.
