The Atemi-waza of the Kouryou Kai System

(Atemi = Striking; Waza = Technique)

Before you can learn to train your speed, accuracy, and power, you first must learn the techniques (waza) that are actually to be used.

HAND STRIKES

This is the basic punching fist used in most hand strikes. The thumb crosses over the index and middle fingers. Do not tuck it in as I've seen many do. And certainly don't leave the thumb out. This fist is the most solid.

Vertical Fist Straight Punch

This form of punching is greatly preferred over the horizontal punching used in many Japanese systems. It is primarily employed in the Chinese systems. We've seen many articles and arguments about how the horizontal fist is better because of a certain bone alignment. However, they tend to overlook the alignment that occurs through the vertical fist.

To properly employ this strike, keep the elbow low and in. The entire arm delivers the blow, not just the fist and hips. With this, the power is greatly magnified. A great example of the difference is to have someone hold a phone book or just a pillow. You goal is to remove it from their hand with only a punch. Try each strike at the exact same power, and try to keep the force of the strike low. You're not trying to win something, you are evaluating. Too much force is more likely to remove the object regardless of which is better. I tried with extremely low power. In fact, no power at all. I tried with only the movement itself.

Forward Snap Kick

This kick is best employed when striking to the groin area, though it can also have great effectiveness if hitting the solar plexus or face when the person is low, maybe trying to tackle.

Side Kick

This kick is only useful if you build a great deal of power behind it and use it at certain right moments.

Knee Strike

If planted correctly and powerfully, a knee strike is very useful in close combat. Especially against grapplers who will try pulling you down into ground fighting. A good knee strike to the solar plexus will make it easier to toss the attacker.
