Chapter 4: Phantom

Kalle gasped as the stage came to life. All of a sudden, she heard organ music that she could place. It was playing the “Phantom of the Opera” theme. She knew from the start she was gonna love the musical! Soon it was underway. The singing was spectacular, and some of the scenes were funny too. She was so glad she was here! But she couldn’t take her mind off of Jeremy. What would they do at the studio tomorrow? Was she going to get to sing with him? As she was thinking, she happened to glance over at Brett. He was snoozing away, and he had even started to drool.

“Hey, Brett. Guess who owes me ten bucks?” she whispered

“Huh? I wasn’t sleeping. Just...uhh..resting my eyes” he stammered, grinding the sleep from his eyes.

“Yeah right, pay up.”

“No way! I wasn’t asleep!”

“Do you want me to tell mom about that time...” she started. This always gets him, she thought.

“NO! Here’s your fucking ten bucks, now leave me alone.”

“Ok, thanks little brother.” Kalle said, snickering. She could always use that line to make her brother do something for her. One time, last year, she came home to find him in bed with her next door neighbor, Heather, naked. They were making out, and were about to venture into adulthood when she came in and caught them. The worst part was, it was in her parents bed! Brett was only 11 at the time, Heather was 13. He would have gotten into BIG trouble. Probably grounded for life. He resented the fact that she could now use this as blackmail against him. She just thought it was damn funny!

“Whatever”, he said, and went back to sleep. Kalle looked surprisingly at her mom, and she had even began to doze off. She couldn’t believe her mom dragged her up to Toronto to see this and she was the one dozing. That was pretty pathetic!

Before she knew it, the show was over. She gave the whole cast a standing ovation. Her mom just barely made it up before the final curtain call!

“C’mon mom, get up. The show’s over,” Kalle shook her mother and she finally woke up.

“Whaa..” her mother said.

“You missed the whole damn show! God, you’re even more pathetic than I am!”

“Kalle, don’t get smart with me. It’s been a long day. Don’t push my buttons or you’ll be sitting in your hotel room tomorrow with nothing to do.”

“Ok, whatever mom.” she replied as she got out of her seat and walked up the aisle. She didn’t want to press her luck with her mother, or else she couldn’t see Jeremy tomorrow! “Let’s go. I’m tired and I need my sleep.”

“Yeah, let’s go.” Brett retorted.

“Shut up Brett!”

“No, you shut up!”

“GUYS! You’re making a scene again!” their mother screamed.

“Actually mom, if you want to get technical, YOU just made a scene.” Kalle laughed as people around her started to stare at her mom.

“Ok, enough! Let’s go back to the hotel.” her mother said with a yawn. “I need some sleep, and so do you. We have a long day tomorrow.”

“Um, actually mom, I already have plans.”

“And what would those be? It’s nice you go off and make plans in a city you’ve never been to, with people you just meet in the middle of a mall.”

“No, mom. You know that guy from “Footloose” I always talk about, Jeremy Kushnier? While you a Brett were in the coin shop, I saw him on the street and we talked. He lives up here, you know! He invited me to his studio tomorrow...to SING mom. With a Broadway star!” she gushed. She couldn’t believe her mom was actually listening to her.

“Well, I’ll have to meet this Jeremy guy. I don’t approve of this, Kalle.” she said sternly.

“Mom, trust me. I have a boyfriend. And anyways, we are just going to do some singing.”

“Whatever. When he comes by to pick you up in the morning, I want to meet him. Understood?”

“Yes.”

“Ok then. Goodnight.”

Kalle hadn’t realized they had already gotten back to the hotel. She got out her key, and let herself into her room. She was so excited that she could barely sleep a wink the whole night. Tomorrow, she thought, I’m going to be singing with Jeremy Kushnier...Kalle sighed and turned over in bed, and fell asleep.
