Romeo - Age 12
Adopted on 11/11/99
Romeo was been rescued from the streets of New York City as a kitten. He came to the Manhattan Valley Cat Rescue shelter when his person got sick and had to be hospitalized. When I first met him, he was crouched behind a table in the shelter. Everytime I tried to speak to him, he moved a little further away. I suspected another change would be traumatic for an older cat so I visited him several times before he came to live with me so that he would recognize my voice. For the first 9 days that he lived with me, he wouldn't let me touch him but each day, I was able to get a little nearer. Finally, on the 9th day, when I held my hand out to him, he butted it with his head. I petted him from the top of his head to the tip of his tail and when I stopped, he butted my hand again. He had accepted me! Today, he'll sit on the couch and stare at me until I pick him up and hold him. Please consider adopting an older cat. They have so much love and affection to give!
