Profile

Name: Daemon [usually the name of a good program that does various functions like a "mail daemon" that tells you email was sent to a bad address; originally a name of an attendant power or spirit]

Format: Supervirus [Chron {"Time"} Virus]

Function: "To Bring Unity To The Net"

Description: Unknown in Season Three [imagined here], she later is shown to have angelic features (including a halo), a hourglass pendant, blue eyes, and a soft French accent

Age: Appears about 16 in human years in "Daemon Rising"

This page started off necessarily incomplete and somewhat vague because the character of Daemon is not dealt with that deeply by the first three seasons of Reboot; in fact, we do not even see her. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since it is a known fact that what we do not see often is scarier in that we can imagine demons are more horrible than they actually are. One can look to the unseen killer in horror movies or the descriptions of Keyser Soze in the 'Usual Suspects' to see the benefits of such a path. Furthermore, we are promised a new Reboot movie, 'Daemon Rising,' that is sure to answer many questions, and most likely allow us to see Daemon (the script is out there, so someone knows the answers to such questions). At any rate, let me touch upon what we do know about Daemon, knowing that an update will (hopefully) eventually be required, as in fact it will be for several of these pages.

Mike the TV was indirectly responsible for the Web Creature (a mysterious black multitentacled Class M entity) coming into Mainframe, but a much worse entity was really responsible, namely Daemon. The prime guardian, Turbo, later informs Matrix that Daemon was responsible for both the Web Creature, as well as for infecting (one symptom being glowing green lines around the temples and icon) nearly all the guardians (except for Bob and new guardian Matrix). Since the fellow guardians around Turbo in "Trust No One" appear to be okay, apparently this infection (or at least the worst effects of it) came after the events of that episode. At any rate, though Turbo is able to resist, the other guardians went against their code to defend the net to help Daemon, and now have a new motto: "to divide and render." Net travel is blocked, guardians are dangerous feared outlaw types, and a search is out for Bob (the "rogue" guardian), the last "clean" full guardian (its his programming that commissioned Matrix, only a cadet version one), whose programming can conquer Daemon. Though Mainframe was saved, the series ended without Bob carrying out his pact with Matrix to go and together defeat this new strange but very dangerous threat to not just Mainframe, but the whole net itself.

Besides knowing that she (Turbo refers to her as female) infected the guardian collective and sent the Web Creature to Mainframe as part of her plan to take over the "known net", we know very little about Daemon. She is some type of supervirus, but is not so powerful that she can take control on her own (thus the need of help from infected guardians) or track Bob and Matrix wherever they may be. By shifting his icon to game sprite mode, Matrix is able to effectively be "offline," which apparently he is at the third season's end (in game sprite mode, thus explaining how Enzo returned). On the other hand, Bob (now Glitch-Bob, which may be important) is not so protected, so apparently it is only a matter of time before he is able to be hunted down. Season Three ends with things still up in the air ...

Daemon Rising

This is a partial update given I have only saw the first series of new episodes (4.01-4.04), but as we can tell by its name, Daemon is the central concern. It turns out that Daemon is actually a benign looking (even when she is destroying her assistant [Daekon]) looking soft spoken (French accent) beautiful young lady, who cannot be more than about twenty (one estimate puts her at 16). This does not make her any less powerful and lethal, though often it appears she is just peacefully following her program ... as Megabyte once said, even she has her role to play. One that requires the "finest" (in her opinion) Guardian, the only one still with a keytool, and able to make portals to the net. [once Guardians are infected by Daemon, the keytools leave]

Yes, just a touch of her energy field even makes our heroes fall under her spell, but she doesn't seem necessarily evil. Daemon, after all, seems confused by Mainframe's resistance, which appears all so futile, since her supremacy is fated to be. Her wonder by AndrAI's love for Matrix is touching, as is her forcing Dot (under her spell) that she loves Bob. On the other hand, Daemon using Bob to create portals as his energy is dying out, and her rough treatment of Hex (in sprite form, which Daemon sees as an abomination, and rejects, which she will soon rue) shows hers negative side. This is a virus (a chron virus, and time is an ongoing theme throughout the four episodes) with a mission, one that sets into motion when the sand of her hourglass charm runs out. Nonetheless, again, as she is confused when Hex (now a virus again) fights her, Daemon doesn't seem evil like Megabyte. She seems more like Hex, a victim of programming. Thus, it's a bit sad when Hex is able to fight her off (powered up with core energy that turned her once more into a virus) and set an antidote to her infection throughout the web, and thus apparently destroying her. [destruction coming a bit too easily given Daemon's power] If Hex can be put to such a good use, imagine what Daemon's potential could be?

  • How was she destroyed? Welman Matrix was not able to send her out of Mainframe via the Gateway command in time. Turbo was only able to resist her for a time and Bob's code also could only partly cure him, perhaps because Glitch was damaged. Enzo has Matrix use his hate of viruses to fight off Daemon's power (Kirk used hate to have Spock fight off a similiar problem in an old "Star Trek" episode), and apparently now Matrix's guardian code (which is not damaged as Bob's was) can be used to heal others. Thus, Matrix's hate is more powerful than any other Guardian, even Turbo. A rather ironical solution that suggests at time might does make right ... one is again left somewhat uneasy.

Matrix heals Hex. Hex influses herself with Mainframe core energy, somehow becoming a virus again, and fights off (and apparently destroys) Daemon. So, the being that gained control of all the guardians as well as the Supercomputer was destroyed by one virus with only the energy of one city. One is left with the notion that Mainframers are not your ordinary sprites and viruses! Or, that Daemon was done with a bit too easily (even if she wasn't destroyed, it was easier in the end to resist her than to battle Megabyte!). Anyway, Welman points out a benign virus can be sent out to counteract the chron virus released by Daemon, so Hex volunteers (well, they WERE desperate). Again, Daemon doesn't look quite as powerful as we thought. A hint is dropped later that Hex might have not been totally benign in her travels as an antidote, but all in all, the system now seemed okay.

    Quotes

"It's a Class-M! It [Web Creature] can use the tear energy to form a portal to the Web!" - Bob

AndrAIa: Why would the Guardians restrict `Net travel?
Maxine: Apparently, they have their own agenda. Something about controlling the known `Net!
AndrAIa: We are talking about the same Guardians, right? To mend and defend?
Maxine: Yes, the same Guardians. But now it`s 'divide and render'... for their own cause!

"We`re here for the rogue Guardian Bob! Throw down your weapons, and come out!" - female lead guardian to Matrix and Turbo in The Episode With No Name

"And a big job to do, but we`ll be okay. The `Surfer can get us back to Mainframe. We`ll deal with Megabyte and then Daemon, together! You ready?" -Bob to Matrix

Daemon: "Hexadecimal! You have turned into an abomination. You are a disgrace to your kind."

Daemon: "I am Daemon. I am not an entity, I am a time. My time is now. The word -- is "cron."

Joe's Unoffical site as usual was helpful with the details, as well as the Silicon Tor website, which has several scripts of the show -- I linked up one for an important Daemon episode. The main photo came from the official site, originally a very neat downloadable calendar.
