AUGUST 9, 2003 - The Connetquot Chiefs captured their 2nd consective Suffolk County title by defeating the Ronkonkoma Cardinals, 10-2, in the championship game. The Chiefs also defeated the St Hughs Saints, 8-0 and the Ronkonkoma Cardinals, 9-0, in earlier playoff action. The Chiefs finished the regular season with a 17-1 record and the season with a 20-1 record. Team Members: Sean Apuzzo, Gregg Sarra, Jr., Anthony Italiano, Chris Pike, Chris Mendoza, Marcus Stroman, Matt Parker, Matt Holder, Joe Botti, Albert Mazilah, Michael Annunziata, Sam Scala. AUGUST 8, 2002 - The CYA Chiefs won the Suffolk County PAL championship by defeating the Ronkonkoma Cardinals, 4-3. Matt Holder's 2 run HR in the bottom of the 5th inning was the difference. The Chiefs beat MCYA, 10-0 and St. Hughs Saints, 9-0 in the 1st two playoff games. The Chiefs finished in 1st place in the regular season with a 16-1-1 record and the season with a 19-1-1 record. During the season, the Chiefs posted no hitters by Matt Parker, Marcus Stroman and Sean Apuzzo (vs his old team, Nesconset Panthers). AUGUST 2, 1997 - The Nesconset Panthers captured the 1st Suffolk County PAL 9 Year Old championship by defeating the Ronkonkoma Cardinals, 10-7. Christian Apuzzo's 2 hits sparked rallies for the Panthers. Joe Mattia made a game saving over the shoulder catch in leftfield with no outs and 2 men on in the bottom of the 6th inning. The team finished the tournament with a 4-0 record. They finished the season with a 15-3 record. AUGUST 23, 1996 - The Nesconset Panthers won the Associated Baseball League 8 Year Old championship by defeating the St. Hughs Saints, 10-3. The team finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record. AUGUST 23-28, 2003 - NATC Week - The Connetquot Chiefs reached the Sweet Sixteen in the Cooperstown Dreams Park National American Tournament of Champions. The Chiefs finished round robin play with a 5-2 record. They finished with an overall record of 6-3 and tied for 9th place in the 65 team single elimination tournament. AUSGUST 20-25, 2000 - The Suffolk County PAL Dream Team finished 3rd out of 49 teams in the Cooperstown Dreams Park National single elimination tournament. PAL finished round robin play with a 5-1 record and was seeded 7th for the single elimination tournament. PAL finished with an overall record of 7-2 and were defeated in the semi-finals by the eventual champion RBI from California, 2-0. Glenn Gibson was voted team MVP by his teammates. INDEPENDENCE DAY, 2000 - The Suffolk County PAL Dream Team won the RYO Independence Day tournament by defeating the St. Paul Angels, 7-4. PAL finished with a 5-0 record. This team was featured on a News 12 broadcast. JULY 16-20, 2003 - The CYA Chiefs placed 3rd in the NABF Freshman World Series in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The Chiefs defeated Worth Dawgs, Kentucky Kids, Tennessee Ravens and '02 runnerup Germantown Giants and lost to runnerup FUNacho Flames and champion Harford Sox. The Chiefs were presented with the Sportmanship Award by the tournament director. Marcus Stroman finished 2nd in the race for the tournament batting title with a .571 average. All tournament players were Marcus Stroman, Matt Parker, Sam Scala and Gregg Sarra, Jr.. JULY 2002 - The CYA Chiefs competed in the NABF 11 Year Old World Classic in Southaven, Mississippi. The Chiefs finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. JULY 10-15, 2001 - The Connetquout Chiefs 10 Year Old Travel Team was runnerup in the NABF Rookie World Series held in Spokane, Washington. The team finished with a 6-2 record losing to the Spokane Heat in the finals. Gregg Sarra, Jr. was the National batting champion. Team Members: James Diver (2), Anthony Italiano (3), Mike Annunziata (5), Chris Pike (7), Kevin Smith (11), Gregg Sarra, Jr. (13), Chris Mendoza (15), Brian Senzel (23), Mike Petre (23) and Sean Apuzzo (32). MARCH 7-9, 2003 - The CYA Chiefs traveled to Tucson, Arizona to compete in the Triple Crown National Spring Championship. After going 0-2 in round robin play, the Chiefs were seeded in the Silver Bracket Tournament. The Chiefs went 3-0 to capture the Silver championship. The Chiefs were led by the pitching of Sean Apuzzo and the hitting of Marcus Stroman. Michael Annunziata and Gregory Sarra, Jr. were standouts offensively and defensively throughout the 3 day tournament. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, 2002 - The CYA Chiefs won the 11 & under Triple Crown Sports Memorial Day championship in Brookhaven, NY. The Chiefs finished with a 4-0 record by defeating the Pathogue-Medford Raiders, the Southbay Battlecats, the SYAG Braves and the Commack Pirates. The Chiefs allowed only 1 run in the 4 games played, with Chris Mendoza, Sean Apuzzo and Matt Parker pitching shutouts. The Chiefs offense was powered by Marcus Stroman, Anthony Italiano, Matt Parker and Gregg Sarra, Jr. Chris Pike was exceptional on defense. The Chiefs qualified for the Triple Crown World Series in Steamboat Spring, Colorado and the Triple Crown Fall Nationals in St. Augustine, Florida. OCTOBER 12-14 2001 - The Denelex Tigers 13 Year Old Travel team finished 2nd in the Triple Crown Fall Nationals held in St. Augustine, Florida. In round robin play, the Tigers lost their first 2 games and were on the brink of elimination in the 3rd game before they pulled off a last inning rally to move on. The Tigers eventually lost in the championship game to Team USA/West Palm Beach Dream Team. Team Members: Anthony 'Beef' Shaw, Christian Apuzzo, Sean Apuzzo, Brian Smith, Kevin Smith, Gerald Smith, Kurt Martinson, Kyle DiGangi, Kevin Conway, Victor Quinones, Michael Guiliani, Bruce Hilliard and Tommy Meaney. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2001 - The Nesconset/Denelex Panthers 13 Year Old Travel team finished 2nd in the Triple Crown National Qualifer held in Suffolk County, New York. The team qualified for the 13 Year Old World Series in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and the Fall Nationals in St. Augustine, Florida. APRIL 25-27, 2003 - The CYA Chiefs earned a berth to the East Coast Tournament Baseball World Series by winning the Northeast Classic ECTB World Series Qualifier held in Scranton, PA. They defeated the Stampede Baseball Club (Rochester, NY) on a 2-hit shutout by Sean Apuzzo, 10-0. They also defeated the Southern Tier Patriots (Corning, NY), 19-1, and the Southline Cardinals(Buffalo, NY), 11-1. Marcus Stroman was the winning pitcher in both games with relief by Sean Apuzzo. The Chiefs defeated the Moriches Bay Ducks, (Moriches, LI) in the championship game, 17-1, with Sam Scala getting the victory with relief from Matt Holder. The Chiefs hit 15 homeruns in the 4 games (Matt Parker (4), Matt Holder (3), Marcus Stroman (3), Mike Annuziata (2), Albert Mazilah (1), Gregg Sarra, Jr. (1) and Sam Scala (1). MARCH 23-24, 2002 - The CYA Winter Chiefs won their second straight tournament by capturing the King of the Hill 11 & under championship in Lexington Park, Maryland. The Chiefs qualified for the ECTB World Series in August. The team finished with a 4-0 record. They defeated UMAC of Maryland in the championship game, 12-0. Sean Apuzzo, Gregg Sarra, Jr. and Chris Mendoza were standouts throughout the tournament. AUGUST 29-SEPTEMBER 2, 2002 - The CYA Chiefs won the Disney Wide World of Sports "Turn Back The Clock Weekend" 11 & under tournament in Orlando, Florida. James Diver's 2 out single in the bottom of the 6th scored Matt Holder from 1st base to secure the victory. Marcus Stroman was the tournament batting champion and Matt Parker was the MVP. The Chiefs completed the tournament with a 4-2 record. In round robin play, they defeated Frozen Ropes from Cape Code, MA & the McLean, Virgina team and lost to Miami Canes & South Florida Raptors. The Chiefs avenged the two loses by beating the South Florida Raptors in the semifinals, 2-1 and the Miami Canes in the championship game, 6-5. The Chief have compiled a 68-8-1 record thus far in 2002. APRIL 11-13, 2003 - The CYA Chiefs traveled to Petersburg, Virginia to compete in the "Quest For The Best" USSSA World Series Qualifer. The Chiefs captured their bracket with a 3-0 record by defeating the NV Navigators (Chris Mendoza - WP), the Richmond Reds (Sam Scala - WP) and the Virginia Rams (Matt Holder - WP). They advanced to the single elimination playoffs where they were eliminated by the Beaver Valley Red team from Pennsylvania. The Chiefs were led by the offense of Michael Annunziata and Gregory Sarra, Jr.. Team Members: Sean Apuzzo, Gregg Sarra, Jr., Michael Annunziata, Chris Pike, Chris Mendoza, Marcus Stroman, Matt Holder, Kevin Smith, Albert Mazilah, Jeremy Delgado, Sam Scala, Joe Botti and Anthony Italiano. FEBRUARY 16-18, 2002 - The CYA Winter Chiefs won the President's Day Challenge at the Cocoa Beach Expo in Florida. The Chiefs went 5-1 in the tournament. They defeated the Central Florida Bombsquad 12-0 in the championship game. Team Members: Sean Apuzzo, Gregg Sarra, Jr., James Diver, Anthony Italiano, Mike Annunziata, Chris Pike, Chris Mendoza, Brian Senzel, Marcus Stroman, Matt Parker, Matt Holder, Albert Mazilah, Mark Rutledge and Kyle Weeks. AUGUST 2003 - The Connetquot Chiefs finished in 1st place in the National Junior Baseball League 12-Year-Old "A" Division. JUNE 2003 - The CYA Chiefs won the NJBL Spring League with a 12-0 record. OCTOBER 2002 - The CYA Chiefs won the NJBL Fall League. The Chiefs completed 2002 with a 81-9-1 record & were listed by USA Sports Rankings - 1st in NY & 8th in USA. MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND, 2001 - The Connetquout Chiefs 10 Year Old Travel Team defeated the Baltimore Buzz in a 4 game series, 3 games to 1. It was billed as the Eastern Seaboard Challenge with two of the best 10 year old teams on the east coast. The Buzz were excellent hosts, treating the Chief mothers to flowers on their special day.
