Clent Frankley Holmes, born July 17, 1917 in Canton, Mississippi, passed away at his home in Saraland, Alabama on Sunday, August 18, 2013. Mr. Holmes is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bailey and Fannie Belle Holmes, four brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Holmes was self-trained musician, starting at the age of 8 years old. He joined Tommy Gentry Band at the age of 17. After serving in the Navy in WWII, he joined the Hank Williams, Sr. Band and continued with them until 1950. He worked as a heavy equipment operator with National Gypsum Company for 22 years and many years with Laidlaw Construction. Mr. Holmes re-established his band in 1965 and continued playing his mandolin until the recent weeks.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mayme Holmes and three children; Cecile Wayne Massey (Boots), Linda Marie Williams and Julia Dianne Gates (Frank); brother, Robert Holmes, sisters; Era (Mutt) Hannah and Lois Boone. Mr. Holmes is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home, Saraland, Alabama on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday from Bayou Sara Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Lambert Cemetery, Citronelle, Alabama.
