The Great Ocean Road is
one of the most spectacular drives in the world.
Looming cliffs,
wooded and forest covered hills,
and mountains sweep down to the wide expanse of the Southern Ocean.
It Starts in Geelong
and more or less follows the coast line of Victoria,
all the way to the South Australian border.
It was built by the sweat and toil of returned servicemen from World War One ,
up until then it was but a collection of dirt tracks
connecting the various settlements along the coast.
Before the road's completion,
the only way to reach
some of the scattered communities
was the ocean.
Hence this stretch of Australian coast
has the reputation as the Shipwreck Coast.
A great number of severe,
and dangerous shipwrecks occured
and some spectacular stories of amazing survival.
We travel alongside some clear
and pristine beaches with glistening white sand,
it's easy to see
why this is an area popular with surfies and surfer types.
Our journey continues
turning corners onto wide vistas of the ocean
and the rolling tree covered hills,
this has to be what makes the whole trip so worthwhile.
