The three caravels of Columbus, Pinta,
Santa Maria and Nina set sail in 1492.
A Brief History
"In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." And his arrival in the West Indies led to enduring links between Europe and the Americas. In the early years of our nation's history, Christopher Columbus was raised to hero status by writers and historians wishing to create a common memory for our new nation. Five hundred years later, by the quincentennial of 1992, Columbus' name had become somewhat tarnished. Is Columbus a hero worth celebrating, or was he a cruel imperialist? Discover the debate, and decide for yourself.
Columbus Acquire something, that is already discovered! How do you clam that? is it for
knowledge or is it for the sport. How do you
clam something that isn’t yours? Why? ask
Columbus. A new experience, yet to be
unfolded to the faces of the old.
How do you explore the uncharted, That has been proclaimed many years before? Now take it all
away, You have nothing to look forward too.
Columbus Day - A History
by Amy Miller
By the close of the 15th century
Most believed the earth was round
Yet none knew its size.
Columbus had to discover this
And missed by 1/4, we surmise.
Some say the Queen sold the crown jewels
To finance Columbus' trip
But in truth the city of Palos, Spain
Provided two of his famous ships.
Columbus' crew lived in Spain
And knew the ocean well
Only four criminals made that first trip
As the seas did swell
Yet no one died on Columbus' first trip
Plenty of food lasted one year
Only 90 men made that initial cruise
As Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
The Santa Maria held 40 men
While the Pinta had 26
The Nina only 24
And that made up the mix.
The weather was pretty good
No storms did they engage
Until the return trip back to Spain
When they hit a large hurricane
Only the Nina and Pinta made the return
While the Santa Maria did shipwreck
The ships were very small
With hardly an afterdeck
Columbus never saw North America,
Landing first in San Salvador
Yet the U.S. Virgin islands he did site
Named them too, as he did explore.
As we now celebrate Columbus Day
We think back to dear old Chris
And remember him with greatness
As we recall his famous ships
