It was Jan. 1986, I was working at Martin Marietta Michoud in New Orleans. It is NASA's facility where they make the external tank for the space shuttle. I was laid off with about 2000 others because that was the year the shuttle exploded with the teacher on it. I had worked there about 3 years. I was a blue collar worker, never afraid of hard work. I worked out at the gym and played competition softball. I was 30 years old at the time but looked 25. I needed to find another job and none was available at the time in New Orleans. So, I heard Boeing Aircraft Company was starting up business in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I had been an aircraft mech. in the Air Force, so I figured I could get a job there, which I did.
I worked there for about eight month's before going back to New Orleans. During the time I was there, I lived in a small brick home that sat in the back yard of my supervisor and his wife's house. They had a large dog and the yard was all dirt. One morning when I woke up I noticed a rash on my right thigh. It was a funny looking rash. One I had never seen before. It was like a bull's eye target. I thought it was just some kind of fungus rash or something, not knowing anything about Lyme Disease at the time. So, I went to the drug store and bought some cream for rashes. The rash then went away in a couple of weeks and I never gave it no thought after that. Then I moved into these old Air Force barracks near where I was working.
I was playing softball and being very active. Then about the 3rd or 4th week after the bite, I started getting bruises all over my body and I would have to lay on a bed of ice to ease the pain because my entire body would hurt so bad I would lay on the ice and cry myself to sleep. I remember going into the hospital there but I don't remember the treatment. I felt better and moved back to New Orleans, that was in 1987. I went back to work as a blue collar worker (sheet metal shop). I must have worked about 6 months when my body started hurting again. So, I quit that kind of work and went back to school to learn drafting. I figured I better go learn a trade I can sit down and do. Well, from 1988 till 1995 I developed different symptoms (dizziness, legs aching, menstrual problems), but I was still very active.
I took 2 years of karate. I had EMG's, blood test (not for Lyme). I was tested for MD, but everything was normal. So, I was told I had Fibromyalgia. Then in 1995 I had a hysterectomy, because of too much pain down there and bleeding every 2 weeks. Then I got Hepatitis A (1995). After I got over that the symptoms of so called FMS got worse. Since then I have been going down hill. I have had EMG's (more), EKG's, EEG's, MRI's (neck & brain), blood test for everything from Lupus to Cancer. I have seen all kinds of doctors from Internal Med., Rheum., Neuro., Blood Disorder doc & Infect. Disease. I have been to pain clinics and emerg. rooms several times. I have had doctors that care and others that tell me I just need to exercise and see a Psych. I have even had a doctor send me to an Infect. Disease doctor around 1992 and the Infect. Disease doctor said she would not even test me for Lyme because there is no Lyme down here in the South.
These doctors down here in the South (Louisiana) don't realize just how much Lyme we have here, but now in the 2000 they are starting to see more and more cases. Five months ago I was so sick I got laid off from my job from missing to much work. I told my Rheum. doctor (I wasn't seeing an Infec. doctor yet) to test me for anything and everything, something is wrong with me. I became a Christian in 1995 and I prayed a lot to God to help me get a doctor to help find out what was wrong with me. Then my Rheum. doctor sent me to the Infect. Disease doctor and I told him my story and he right away said, "You have Chronic Lyme Disease."
Now, I have told many doctors my story but this doctor was the only one listening. The Infect. Disease doctor put me on oral amoxicillon 500mg, three times a day. After the first month of taking them I felt good enough to go back to work. Now 3 months have passed and I am feeling bad again. The Antibiotic is hardly working anymore. The Infect. doctor said he wants to try I.V. antibiotics but he wanted to wait a little longer and he wants me to get my heart checked out because of heart palps and some pain in that area, along with shortness of breath. My symptoms: pain everywhere, pain in joints, light headed, twitching, night sweats, heart pain, numbness and tingling, numbness in face at times, cognitive problems, fatique, jitters (feels like nerves are spasming), muscle spasms, etc.…
This evening 5-26-00 I am going to take a stress test for the not so old ticker. Well, we see from here what comes next. I can't stand the thought that I have to live with this the rest of my life, but with Jesus I know I can. It gets extremely tough because I also have to take care of my handicap mother. My sister use to help me with my Mom but she died of liver cancer in 1996. Sometimes I feel like an extreme warrior fighting a battle with courage and then other times I feel like crawling inside a cave and everybody leaving me alone. Us who do have Lyme Disease need to stand together in our battle. I would love to hear from others with this illness. It makes it even harder when there is not to many people who give you any empathy or compassion as to what we are going through. God bless everyone and I am here to listen to anyone who needs a friend who understands because I know I do.

Vaccine Story
Submitted by: HomeRN99@aol.com
My husband and I had the Lymerix vaccine last year. Our health has deteriorated greatly since this vaccine. I had become sick with in the first 24 hours of getting the first vaccine. I had a severe flu like symptoms for about a week. My right elbow started hurting and the muscle pain never went away. I contacted my doctor but he felt it was not due to the vaccine. He stated that he was not aware of any adverse reactions from Lymerix vaccine. The day I got my second vaccine I had complained to him about the body pain. Within 24 to 48 hours after the second shot I was in severe pain in all my joints and muscles throughout my entire body. A week after the second shot I was in the doctor's office crying in pain for him to help me.
Over the past year and a half I have lived in chronic pain. Someday is so bad I have to have my husband (whom is also very ill from this vaccine) help me to get up. I have to lay in bed and move every joint until I can even think about getting out of bed. There has been four times over the past year and a half that I have been on able to move my legs. First time lasted about three minutes and the last three times have been within the past month and has lasted up to 20 minutes. This is very scary to say the least. I have a 10 year old son that I used to be able to skate, bowl, and bike with. Now I am unable to do much of anything with him, which is very hard to deal with. He watches his Mom and dad in pain everyday.
My husbands pain started slowly throughout late 1999 until he hurt his back on New Year's Day and has never been the same since. He use to workout and run. Now he just sits around because of the pain. My husband was so bad a few weeks ago he told me he thought he was dying. You can only imagine how this makes me feel, watching him in so much pain and being unable to help him. My husband and I were both very healthy prior to this vaccine. At this time there is no cure or treatment for us. I have faith that something will be found to help us, but that can only happen if SmithKline is made to remove this vaccine from the market.
SmithKline needs to work at finding treatment for the people that have been hurt by this vaccine, and there are a lot of people that have been harmed and are living in chronic pain every day due to this Lymerix vaccine. As of July 2000 there had been 774 adverse reactions reported to the FDA. And there spoke person states "we see no red flags here," I wonder how many more people have to be harmed by this vaccine before they do anything. Please help me stop SmithKline from hurting any more people and now our children. They have it in front of the FDA for approval for children 4 to 14 years of age. I cannot bear the thought of another child being harmed by this vaccine.
Contact me if you would like to help me stop this from hurting more people. Today October 16, I was paralyzed from my neck down for close to 15 minutes. Needless to say this is very scary. Every time it happens it gets longer and longer. I just hope and pray that it will not be permanent one day.

A good October to all of you! I hope that you're enjoying the cooler weather that we've been having lately. (After the terrible summer we've had, it's well deserved!) This month's Natural Alternatives' column is dedicated to an extremely controversial topic: genetically engineered foods.
Many of you have probably now heard about recalls by both the Kellogg's Company and Taco Bell restaurant chain, resulting from their concerns over the use of genetically engineered corn, which had been used in some of their products. These concerns are based on the fact that there can be unknown allergens contained within this corn, which could possibly cause those who consume it to become ill.
Moreover, genetically engineered foods can contain proteins that have never before been consumed by humans, further opening to question just how safe they are. The concerns over these foods have prompted the need for legislation which will enable the public to know in advance, whether or not the foods they purchase have been genetically engineered. The Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act, known in the U.S. House of Representatives as H.R. 3377, and in the Senate, as bill number S. 2080, would require that the packaging of all foods that have been genetically engineered contain labeling to indicate this.
Since genetically engineered foods are becoming increasingly popular in the food manufacturing process, and will ultimately affect us as a nation, knowing which foods have been genetically engineered is of paramount importance to us all.
Consequently, we must voice our opinions on this subject by getting in touch with our state senators and representatives, as well as the next President of the United States, and request that they publicly endorse this bill. In an effort to make this as simple as possible, I have taken four form letters on this subject (sent to me by my friend Cary), and posted them on Web pages so that you can print them out, and then sign and snail mail them to your legislators.
Many of you may have questions as to whom your Senate and House of Representatives' elected officials are, so I've listed a few simple directions below which should enable you to easily find them. The links mentioned below, are located after these directions.

This month's word is "Pooped"
We know that well!
Lots of people find themselves pooped at the end of a hard week.
Some manage to function when feeling this way most or all of the
time. Don't go searching in the bathroom or barnyard for the back-
ground of this term. We use it today because our ancestors took to
the sea for most of their long-distance journeys.
Englishmen headed toward the New World found that violent waves
did most damage when they crashed against the stern, or poop, of
a vessel. Strong winds and turbulent water could last for weeks. Any
ship that lurched out of a long bout with nature was sure to be badly
"pooped" - lucky to be afloat after days of pounding.
Sailors who described the splintered stern of a ship to buddies in the
tavern or to family at home frequently confessed that they felt as
pooped as their vessel looked. Landsmen who heard the sea-going
expression borrowed it and put it to use. As a result, we still turn to
it in order to describe our feelings in times of total fatigue.
We are so sorry to hear that Steve contracted Sepsis and was
hospitalized. He is now recovering. He is not able to do
a column this month.
You can send him well wishes at Borrelias@aol.com
God speed your health, Steve,

'Tis Apple Pie time! Gather up them apples let's bake a pie Swedish style. This pie forms its own top crust; it is simple and delicious. I have made a lot of apple pies in my past and this is still my favorite. Of course this is great served warm with ice cream too. :)
Swedish Apple Pie
Fill a 9 inch or 10 inch pie plate 3/4 full of chopped, pared apples.
Mix 2 tsp. of cinnamon and 2 tbls. of sugar ... sprinkle over apples.
Mix together:
1 1/2 sticks melted butter 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
1 cup sugar 1 egg
1 cup flour dash salt
Pour over apples; makes its own crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. If you want to use ready made bottom crust you can.
Happy fall :)
Carla
Note: Once again, I tried Carla's recipe...I try them all! This is great and easy too! Don't forget you can use a sugar substitute. Pat
