CONTAINER GARDEN OR LITTER BOX ?

Growing plants in containers can greatly enhance
your porch/deck/yard/patio/garden--and the variety
of plants and containers goes on forever. However,
I recently ran into a snag when my rambunctious
kittens decided to turn one of my whiskey barrel
planters into 1) a playground, and 2) a bathroom.
When I removed last year's pansies prior to putting
in some petunias and geraniums, they decided the
barrel made a wonderful, tiny racetrack. After I
planted the barrel, they concluded that I'd
created a floral litter box for them. To combat
the problem, I relied on a trick I read long
before I ever imagined I'd have a cat problem--and
so far, it seems to be working very well. I simply
trimmed a rose bush and scattered the thorny
trimmings among the flowers in the planter. The
kittens have lost interest in the barrel, and the
flowers have now grown sufficiently to cover the
rose trimmings themselves.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NOSE

Have you ever stopped to smell the roses only to
discover that they HAD no smell?

Some don't--but oh, those that do! If you're
thinking of adding a superfragrant rose to your
yard or garden, here are a few stellar smellers
to consider:

- Chrysler Imperial--hybrid tea (crimson)
- Crimson Glory--hybrid tea (crimson)
- Double Delight--hybrid tea (cherry red)
- Fragrant Cloud--hybrid tea (orange red)
- Granada--hybrid tea (yellow with pink tinges)
- Sundowner--grandiflora (orange/salmon)
- Sutter's Gold--hybrid tea (yellow with red
shading)
- Tiffany--hybrid tea (pink)
