Not much has changed on this stretch of the LIE, between
Junction Blvd in Rego Park and 108th St. in Forest Hills. The
99th St. walkbridge has been rebuilt at least once and was once
pulverized by a truck.
Pedestrians who want to cross it have to navigate maze-like stairwells,
enclosed in hurricane fenced cages, at both ends. Those who designed
it obviously didn't consider those fearful of being trapped by
muggers in such an environment, let alone those fearful of being
trapped there if another truck pulverizes it.
What was once just the feeder lane for the 108th St. exit, is
now the end of the line for one of the recently added fourth lanes
extending from Maspeth. The terraced building glimpsed on the
right is part of Park City, a humongous cooperative development
from the late 50's. It was one of many rental developments that
turned co-op in the 80's, unlike Lefrak, which has remained a
renters paradise. The attached houses just past it to the right,
are typical of the latter baby boom, 2 family, 1960's architecture,
which abounds throughout northeastern Queens.
