The fabled LIE, as seen through
the cyclone fence prison of the East Hampton Blvd. overpass. The
eastbound expressway is about to take a steep descent into Cross
Island Pkwy valley, in Douglaston, Queens. Despite the steepness of it's own descent, the LIE will still tower over the submerged CIP, as it passes over it. Many wet weather accidents take place here, due to many motorists not realizing just how steep the long, broad hillside is, until it's too late and they're too close to another car to brake in time. The fence is supposed to prevent demented vandals from lobbing heavy objects off the overpass onto motorists below. |
UPDATE 6/2001: Massive reconstruction
is changing the scene from this overpass. In fact, it's changing
this overpass too, visible on the next page. Shots of the Cross
Island interchange can be viewed on the two pages following that,
devoted specifically to the reconstruction. Below, the view west, for the most part still unchanged, although glimmers of the future can be seen as already depicted at Cloverdale Boulevard on a page preceeding this one. The spartan cyclone fencing below guards the open maw that was once the right of way for southbound East Hampton Boulevard. It awaits the rebuilding of the nearly fifty-year-old overpass. |
