Queens Blvd/63rd Drive
Subway Entrance
Photo Gallery: Queens Blvd

Death Blvd

This subway entrance is diagonally across the boulevard, from the old Alexanders building, now a Sears shopping center. The busy station had a barber shop, florist and a pool hall downstairs, between the surface and the token booth mezzanine level. Since it was crammed into the storefronts that surrounded it, I guess the transit authority assumed that passersby might not see it, so they stuck a big, illuminated sign at the curb pointing to it. Most subway entrances along Queens Boulevard are stairwells placed in plain sight, smack dab in the middle of the sidewalk. When I shot this in 1992, the storfront to the left was a restaurant. Now it's a topless club.
