Ooh, we have some excitement here! I spent hours trying to get a good shot with a jetliner flying overhead towards JFK Airport, but had to settle for a fire truck as the daylight waned. The dark compact with the spoiler is heading for either the westbound Belt Pkwy, or the southern fringe of Lindenwood. The fire truck is certainly heading for Lindenwood, unless a car is on fire somewhere along the Belt. I didn't even realize until I scanned this that a sign warning motorists to clear those fire lanes was posted to that pole on the right. Well, you see it for yourselves, those signs are not just crying wolf. |
We're now across the Belt looking south into Howard Beach. A large chinese restaurant is on the right corner, where traffic exiting the eastbound Belt meet up with Cross Bay. The restaurant used to be Italian until maybe a couple of years before I shot this (10/1999). North Fork Bank was a little hole in the wall operation based all the way out near Montauk on Long Island. Then, it discovered mergermania and went crazy buying up banks right and left. I have it on good authority that there are banks much more friendly towards their communities than this one is. They are apparently not the most beloved among their industry compatriots either. A gulf station sits on the other side a block away. Gulf used to be a big presence when I was a kid, but they nearly disappeared from this area by the 1980's. Lately it seems their numbers have been increasing again. |
