Name on photo was Grandma Hemperly. It's believed to be the wife of Harry Hemperly

I am assuming this would be the second wife of Henry, Mary A., as the first wife died at age 31. This woman looks older than 31 to me.

She would be mother to Eli, Granville, Charles, David, Joseph and Margaret.

Thanks to Ted Rubright for the photo's and helping me to identify some that I had!

The photo's on this page are from an album belonging to Thomas Rubright, son of Edward John. I am assuming it belonged to Edward. The photo's were in the possession of a friend of Thomas's wife Laura. She returned them to Ted's father, Le Roy Rubright. Thank you to this woman!!!

Harry (Henry) Hemperly was born between 1813-1817 in Pennsylvania. His occupation was that of a Tailor. He died before the 1900 census.

The marriages of Harry are a little confusing. When I first began my research, I was told that the mother of Jennie Hemperly b. 1851 was Nancy Lyons. In the 1850 census for Harry, his wife is listed as Mary J., and all the census after list his wife as Mary or Mary A. In 1900, Mary is listed as a widow and the years of her marriage as of that date was listed as 46 which would make her marriage date to Harry abt. 1854. I have found nothing on Nancy Lyons.

Mary Hemperly was born December 28, 1839 in Schuykill, Pennsylvania. Parents are unknown at this time. She died May 27, 1920

First City House Served as First Court House

The Russell Tavern, located on the northeast corner of Mulberry and Third Streets, was the first house in Williamsport and cradle of justice in Lycoming County. The original photograph of the inn was made by Robert Y. Nice shortly before the building was destroyed by fire in 1871. In the doorway of the building is H. Hemperly, who operated a tailor shop in the building. The building was also known as the Affie Dumm house.

Old Photograph Shows First House Built in Williamsport

An historical landmark in the city for 75 years and the first house of Williamsport from which the present city grew was the “Russell Tavern” located on the northeast corner of Third and Mulberry Streets, where the Commercial block now stands.

The old log house known by various names of “Russell Tavern”, “Russell Inn” and “Affie Dunn House” was also the first tavern in the city and one of the first courthouses of Lycoming County.

First County Birth

It was here that the first birth in Williamsport took place. William Russell, the son of James Russell, was born in the old house on Sept. 23, 1796 soon after it was built by the elder Russell. James Russell died soon after and in due time his wife married Joseph Dumm. They conducted the tavern for 50 years.

Among the children born to this union was a daughter named Eva. This name was soon converted late “Affie”. She married, but her husband soon died and the people knew her only by the name Affie Dumm. After her parents died, she continued to live in the old log house. Thus the tavern and the court house became known as the “Affie Dumm House”.

The history of “Russell Inn” as the cradle of Lycoming County justice is also interesting. Two courts for Lycoming County were held prior to the sessions at the inn. Both were held at Jaysburg at the tavern of Eleanor Winton were Forth and Rose Streets now intersect.

Owner Defendant

For several years courts were held at “Russell Inn”. At one court session, James Russell, the owner was a defendant. He was indicted for keeping a “tippling house”. At the same session Eleanor Winton , at whose inn court was previously held, was also indicted on the same charge.

It was not long after this session, court was moved again, this time to a tavern known as the “Rising Sun”, located on East Third Street near Market Square.

“Russell Inn” stood until August 1871 when it was destroyed in the great configuration which destroyed several houses in this area. The blaze broke out on Sunday morning in Else’s Hotel stable, on the corner of Mulberry and Church Streets. (can’t read first two words) Inn soon fell victim to the flames, as did the house of ex-Governor, Packer, on the opposite corner.

Thought to have been of incendiary nature, the fire which destroyed the old Inn was the most extensive configuration in the residential portion of Williamsport that ever occurred here. At the time of the fire, the Russell house was occupied by H. Hemperly, a merchant tailor, and Hoyland and Sons, saw manufacturers.

  Inn Divided

John F. Meginness, in his history of Lycoming County, gives a graphic picture of the inn. “It was 32 by 26 feet, the longest part fronting on Third Street, and two stories in height. The first floor was divided into four rooms. Two of the rooms fronted Third Street and two room looked northward into what was then a forest of timber.

A large brick chimney ran up through the middle of the building affording a fireplace for each of the front rooms. The second story was divided into three rooms and a large garret. The house had a shingle roof fastened with hand made nails.

The photograph of the old log house was made by photographer Robert Y. Nice a few weeks before the destruction of the inn. In the photo, H. Hemperly, great grandfather of Mrs. Edna Hemperly Kitchen, of 515 Wilson Street, is standing in the doorway to his tailor shop. The original photograph and a drawing of the original is owned by Mrs. Kitchen and her mother Mrs. Ocie Hemperly, wife of the late William Benjamin Hemperly, Jr.

  Betsy Ross Rello

The Hemperly family, which traces it’s ancestry back to Betsy Ross, who made the first American flag, also possesses a Bible printed in 1783 which contains a lock of Betsy Ross’ hair. The bible was handed down from Annie Ross who lived at the corner of Berkley Place and Washington Boulevard where she operated a drug store in a room of her house.

The photograph of the Russell Tavern and the Bible may be offered to the Lycoming County Historical Society to be added to the collection of historical data of the County.

Death of Mr. Harry A. Hemperly

The friends of Mr. Harry A. Hemperly will be surprised to hear of his death which occurred yesterday afternoon at Maple Hill, Washington Township. For many years Mr. Hemperly was employed in the grocery department of the store of Mr. L. L. Stesrus and proved himself a faithful and reliable clerk. Early last spring, his health suddenly gave way and he was obliged to throw up his situation. As he did not improve in this city his father in-law induced him to remove to his residence thinking the change of location and air might benefit him, but he continued to grow worse rapidly and finally passed away as stated above. He was 31 years, 4 month and 16 days old and leaves a wife and one child. The funeral will take place for the residence of Mr. Fritz , Maple Hill on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.
