In sexual reproduction a joining of two sex cells provides the organism with the complete genetic information. The male sex cell, sperm, joins with the female sex cell, egg. The process of fertilization of the egg by the sperm produces a fertilized egg. Before fertilization the egg contained ˝ of the genetic information and the sperm the other half.
