This Months' Featured Lure!
Not too much is known about the company and lure that is featured this month. Called the "Chief", it's an ingenious lure that's made to resemble what I think is a swimming squid. I'm highlighting this lure because it shows the originality that some of the saltwater lure makers had in their design. It was made by a company called SO-CO, according to my good friends Frank Pintauro and Roy Curley. Roy has the original box for the lure that's pictured below. I'm told the box has a picture of a fisherman holding a rod with a lure tied on and the line is curled in a way as to say So-Co. which stands for South County. Printed on the end of the box is Surf Lure Plug, South County. They were located in Quonochontaug, RI and might have been affiliated with Pt. Jude Bait Co. This awesome glass-eyed bait was made in the early to mid 1940s and is finished in natural wood and stained a red squid like color on top. It was tied with lots of feathers for action when swimming. This piece had to be a catcher of Striped Bass. It was a large 7" plug weighing 3 1/2 ozs. and came with one extra strong 5/0 treble hook, a 5/0 double hook on the rear and two single hooks, one on each side. I've seen two other colors, Red Head/White and a Blue Herring scale finish. The scale pattern and body style of the swimmer looks identical to some Pt. Jude lures. I can still remember the joy I felt when I found this piece at Stormville Airport flea market about five years ago. I remember calling Frank and telling him that I found a piece just like the one that he proudly displayed. That's it for this month, next month I'll stay in Rhode Island and feature a Pt. Jude Bait Co. lure.
