This Months' Featured Lures!
This month we move up the coast to Massachusetts for some more big baits for catching Stripers. All are made by Fishmaster Company of Wollaston 70, Mass. and are designed and endorsed by some of the great striper fisherman of the 1940's. First is a beautiful jointed deep running swimmer developed by Jerry Sylvester. Called Jerry's-Jointed, it came in four colors and model numbers. JJ-50 Blue Mullet, (the lure pictured above) JJ-51 Pike Finish, JJ-52 Green Mullet and JJ-53 Red/White. The length was 7 3/8", it weighed 2 1/2 Oz. and was outfitted with two 5/0 Heavy Mustad treble hooks. The hardware was made of Monel and brass nickel plated. The lure dives deep and provides the liveliest action known according to the catalog put out by Fishmaster. Most of the time these lures were put together with the two screw eyes joined to each other. This one has a barrel swivel between them and has lots more action built in to it.
The second lure is called Jerry Sylvester's Mullet and is a Flaptail surface swimmer. It came in the same colors and hook configuration as the jointed model. The one pictured above is Pike Finish, model J-46, the length is longer at 9 1/2" overall and the weight is heavier at 3 1/4 Oz. The model numbers are different too, starting with J-45 for Blue Mullet and ending at J-48 for the Red / White model. Below is an earlier model in Blue Mullet. This lure is about 3/4" shorter than the one above. It also feels heavier by about a half an ounce.
The next lure pictured is a Fishmaster Popper that is designed to pop on the surface. It is tested and approved by Ollie H. P. Rodman, well know expert fisherman-author of the book "Striped Bass". It is 7" long and weighs 3 3/4 Oz. and has two 5/0 Heavy Mustad Treble Hooks. It came in four colors and model numbers. CP-90 Squid Red, CP-91 Black, CP-92 Pink Streak and CP-93 Silver Streak which is the lure pictured above.
Last up is a Bass-Aqua, (Thanks Sal for the use of your box and lure) Built for easier and longer casts even in the wind and the Monel diving lip is adjustable for control of action and depth according to the catalog. It's length was 6 3/4", it weighed 3 3/4 Oz. and had two 7/0 extra heavy duty Mustad double hooks. The lure pictured above is Pike scale (BA-61). It also came in Blue Mullet (BA-60), Green Mullet (BA-62), Red-White (BA63), Silver Streak (BA-64) and all Black (BA-65).
Fishmaster also made a plug called the Heavyweight and a Heavyweight Tarpon lure. I don't have an example of either lure at this time but will add some pictures when I can acquire them.
The last picture shows a copy of the catalog that came with their lures. If you'd like some help with identifying a saltwater lure you're not sure about or if you have any saltwater lures for sale or trade you can email me at:
