This Months' Featured Lures! This month we're staying in Massachusetts for some more great baits for catching Stripers and Bluefish. All are made by REEAL Lures, Inc. 50 Bourne Street , Three Rivers, Mass. Designed and made by Floyd Roman, they had many coats of paint for durability and used heavy screw eyes or brass wire for line ties. They also had brass cups and screw eyes for hook holders. Well made baits that would hook and hold large fish. The first one is the largest lure he made and called the "NIKE". It is painted in rare black and gray color, is 7 inches long, weighs 3 ozs. and was made as a swimmer/darter. It came with three 3/0 short shank treble hooks that were cadmium plated. Most of the Floyd Roman plugs I've seen came with a short shank hook made by Auburn Fishhook Co, Inc. in Auburn, NY. As far as I know all Floyd Roman lures were made without any identifying marks printed on the lure. The second lure pictured is the same size in Eel color.
The third lure is pictured below and is called a Little Nike. It's the same as the other two except it's only 5 inches long and has two 1/0 trebles instead of three. It weighs only 1.5 ozs. The smaller sized baits have regular length hooks instead of short-shank ones. An odd thing about the NIKE is it's name. On the box is a statement that says "The MISSILE that guides you to good Striper and other game fish." These plugs were made in the late 1940's which was years before the Nike missile of the same name came into being.
Fourth up (below) is another NIKE that is smaller than the first two but larger than the Little Nike. It's a little over 6.5 inches long and weighs 2.5 ozs. This lures' color is all gold with a few red factory touchups and comes with three regular 2/0 treble hooks.
The next lure pictured is a Floyd Roman Sizzler. A Real Hot Popping Plug for all game fish according to the box top, this plug is the tougher two-hook model that is weighted in the tail section with lead instead of having a tail hook. It weighs a whopping 3.5 ozs., has 3/0 short-shank trebles and is a little over 7 inches long. Color shown is brown, with a white belly. It was also available in blue and white color.
Last up is another Floyd Roman Sizzler, the Sizzler Jr. model. It's in Eel color and has two 1/0 treble hooks, weighs 1 oz. and is 5 inches long. I've also seen this plug in a blue and white color. I don't think it came in a leaded version like the large sized Sizzler.
Floyd Roman also made a plug called a Dart & Dart. It looks something like a Sizzler but the head configuration was inverted so it would dive and dart instead of pop on the surface as the sizzler did. I don't have an example of it at this time but will add some pictures and details when I can acquire them.
