This Months' Featured Lure! This beautiful lure was made by the Creek Chub Bait Co., which was located in Garrett, Indiana around 1953. Found in Brooklyn, NY by a friend of mine it made its way into my collection via a three way trade. This lure was an experimental lure made by Creek Chub that was never put into production. I can't find any paperwork or reference to it except what is in Harold Smiths book. From all the information I can gather and a little conjecture on my part this lure was a predecessor to the Salt Spin & Surf Darters. From the measurements I've taken it looks like it was made from a 6900 Striper Pikie body but the head was cut in the configuration of a darter. This lure was definitely made for catching Striped Bass and other saltwater gamefish. I've personally had two of these in my collection, the one above and the one pictured in Harold Smiths book. I found that one on a wall with some other tackle in Port Washington, NY around six years ago. A great field find! The one above is the one I traded for. It came in a box marked 34SD on the side. I think that it stands for either Striper Darter or maybe Surf Darter. I've seen one other darter, it is Silverflash in color and I know of one other, also in Silverflash. My guess is that this plug didn't swim too well because the angle of the cut on the head is to steep. It just doesn't look like it would dive and dart like a good darter is supposed to. This is probably one of the rarest Creek Chub lures in my collection and it also started me on my Blueflash collection which can be seen on the "My Collection" page. "What a great piece to build a color collection around." If anyone would has any other reference about this lure or would like to add any comments please feel free to email me.
