CHRISTMAS PAST

"I Remember Christmas Way Back Then"

I remember when I was just a child,

We celebrated Christmas

in a totally different style.

With ax in hand,

our Dad would take us to the woods

to cut our own tree.

Talk about excitement!

Well, that was almost too much

for a young lad like me.

We'd bring it home,

place it in a homemade stand,

put popcorn rope on it;

that the night before we'd strung by hand.

Then we'd add popcorn balls

and gingerbread men.

Christmas was a family project way back then.

Mom was always in the kitchen

baking up something that smelled so nice.

She would make us cookies and candy,

and apple with spice.

Oh yeah, I remember when...

Christmas was different.

Way back then carrolers from the church

would come by and sing carols for us.

They were invited in;

where with cookies,

cake and eggnog

Mom would always make a fuss.

The preacher and his wife

would usally drop in,

you know,

the church sure played a big part

in our Christmas back then.

Going to Grandma and Grandpa's

was always neat.

He'd take us on a ride

in a horse drawn sled,

and she'd always fix us a treat.

You know Christ's birth

was in our Christmas,

and "Silent Night"

was the song we'd sing.

We didn't hear much about

an old gent with a beard and a red suit

and what he'd bring.

Oh yeah,

I remember when...

Christmas was different

way back then.

Now our presents,

by today's standards,

wouldn't be considered too grand,

But I've still got an old wooden gun

that was carved with love

by Daddy's own hands.

We would hang our stockings

over the fireplace

like they do today.

And Mom would fill them with apples

and oranges,

and put in a few marbles so we could play.

Mom would fix a big Christmas dinner,

and family and friends were invited.

Lots of singing and laughter

sure kept this young boy excited!

Oh yeah,

I remember when...

Christmas was sharing love

more than presents and gifts,

way back then.

Old-fashioned Christmas

by today's standards,

are all gone away,

but the memory of them in my heart

will always have a place to stay.

Oh yeah,

I remember when...

Christmas was different way back then.
