Clement Coxsone Dodd

One of the most important producers in the history of reggae music, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd was a vital figure in the journey of Jamaican popular music from ska through rocksteady and early reggae, on par with Duke Reid and Lee Perry. Dodd got his start in the Jamaican scene by operating sound systems in the '50s, beginning to record discs at the end of the decade, and opening the first black-owned Jamaican studio in 1963. Exact details of who he produced, and when, in the 1960s are sketchy, as they are for most vintage reggae music, but it's agreed that there were very few early reggae performers of consequence who did NOT record for Dodd at one point. While he has worked with stars like Burning Spear, Sugar Minott, Frankie Paul, Brigadier Jerry, and Niney the Observer, his best work is considered to have been laid down during the rocksteady era at Studio One; many of the tracks he produced during this time have been "versioned" ever since.
