Riddim: Reggae vocabulary for a rythem pattern. A riddim is primarily a bassline and usually a steady drumpattern is played with the bassline.
The sleng Teng riddim was built in King Jammys studio around 1985. Even though Jammys was placed as the producer of the riddim, it was actually built by the young duo at the time known as Steelie & Cleavie. The first voice on the tune was by Wayne Smith, Followed by John Wayne, then Johnny Obscourne. Once these artist made it big, then almost every Artist on Jammys label rode pon that actual riddim. It was later rebutted in 1988 when Tippa Irie came out with "Sleng Teng dead already" which was first played by David Rodigon in his famous clash against a well known Jamaican Radio DJ. The only tune to really take over the Sleing Teing phenomen was the "Punanny" ridim, which was also produced by Jammys and voiced by Admiral Baily.
