Help LA Zoo Elephants Ruby and Gita The Los Angeles Zoo has decided to separate two of their oldest residents, Gita, a 44-year-old Asian elephant, and Ruby, a 41-year-old African elephant. Ruby would be transferred to a zoo in Knoxville. The two have been together since 1987. Female elephants are extremely sociable and roam together in their natural habitat. Transferring elephants is extremely dangerous and many have not survived such long trips. What you can do: Write letters of protest to the following people. Each letter counts for 10,000 votes. The Honorable James Hahn Councilman Tom LaBonge Susan Mazzerella, President Zoo Board TELL NIKE NO DOG FIGHT SCENE IN COMMERCIAL Nike has unveiled a new ad campaign entitled "The Battle" which shows young men playing basketball. It then flashes to a scene where a Rottweiler and a Pit Bull are face to face and ready to "battle". When taken in context with the rest of the message it sends an extremely bad taste message to our younger generation that fighting dogs are somehow "cool". The Ad Agency that developed this campaign is Wieden & Kennedy who "specialize in understanding cultural trends". Their Feb 7th press release states ""One-on-one, five-on-five. Me and you, my posse vs.yours. Street vs. gym. Who's left standing? Battlin'. It's old school." Please help by insisting that Nike take this offensive advertisement off the air or at least delete the dog image portion of it. And until they do, you will no longer buy any Nike products and/or will get rid of any Nike items you might have. Many are also requesting that they release a public service message to correct the implications of all the damage dog fighting does to the animals involved. Of course with such a large corporation Nike might also be advised to make a contribution to an appropriate animal advocacy group that defends abused animals. Please get your friends to help out too. Dog fighting affects all breeds, large or small. Often times already abused shelter dogs are used as bait by dog fighters and are subjected to a horrible death.
