Meet The Parents

Analyze This proved that yes, indeed, DeNiro can be funny. Meet The Parents, a film by the jay Roach of Austin Powers fame, proves once again, that yes, DeNiro can be funny.

Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) wants to ask his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo) to marry him, his plans are derailed when he finds out that to win her, he must ask her father, (DeNiro) for her hand. The film is a hilarious ride filled with disaster after disaster, each one funnier than the next.

Imagine being in love. Imagine wanting to get married. Imagine having to meet your would be spouse's family, your future in-law's. Now take that blend of emotions and add Murphy's Law put it on a high light and let it boil, how does that feel? Well that's exactly what Greg Focker feels during the weekend from hell. I have had weekends from hell, as have we all, but never like this, to this degree. Given that, it made me feel better, knowing that no matter what happens to me in that kind of situation it could never get this bad.

I must admit I saw this movie in the theatre, rather reluctlantly, but was very pleasantly surprised. While some events in the film bordered on the ridiculous, I feel it never turned into slapstick, nor where the character's sacrificed for mere laughs. I knew that this was one to see again, so I bought it on DVD.

The film is an anamorphic transfer, so the picture quality is impeccable. Audio options are Dolby Digital and DTS.

The extras are cool, though the commentaries are a bit weak. I was looking forward to the one with the cast, but it was taped at two different locales and I think the banter suffers for it. Though there are a few interesting tid bits and anecdotes that make it worthwhile listening.

I would still recommend this film to anyone.
