Biography:
Maxwell Weinberg was born on April 13, 1951, in Newark, New Jersey.
At the age of five Max saw the "Ed Sullivan Show" on which Elvis Presley appeared in 1956. Unlike other people, Max was
not fascinated with Elvis, but with Elvis' drummer D. J. Fontana. By the age of 7, with his parents' support Max
was playing in public.
In 1974 he got a job drumming for the Broadway-Musical "Godspell". In the same year he took notice of a Village Voice Ad placed by Bruce.
After auditioning, Max became a member of Bruce Springsteen's "E-Street Band" on August 23, 1974. Within days of his successful audition,
Max left college and his Broadway job and was on the road, ready to tour with Bruce Springsteen and his "E-Street Band".
For the next 15 years, Max would record and tour with Bruce. When Bruce broke up "The E-Street Band", Max was initially very angry saying "I've never been fired from anything!".
He also had trouble coming to terms with the fact that the music, Bruce's, he'd been playing for most of his adult life would no
longer be part of (drum playing) life.
After "The E-Street Band", Max brought together Jersey musicians in his own band called "The Max Weinberg 7".
Since 1993, Max has been the band leader for Conan O'Brien's show "Late Night with Conan O'Brien". Besides providing the music for the show
Max has also been known to star in some of Conan's sketches.
In 1995, Max and the rest of "The E-Street Band" joined Bruce in the studio in order to record a few new tracks for Bruce's "Greatest Hits."
In 1999, Max went out on the road with Bruce and "The E-Street Band" for "The Reunion Tour". Before going out on the road, Bruce stopped by Conan O'Brien's show and played "Workin' On The Highway". After all, Bruce
was taking Max away from the show and Conan was left without a bandleader (a replacement was found while Max was touring).
In 2000, MAx's jazz-infused big band "The Max Weinberg 7" released their self-titled debut album on Hip-O Records.
In 2002 Bruce got "The E-Street Band" back in the studio to record "The Rising" which was followed by a world tour in 2002-2003.
Max continues to be a part of the "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" show.
If Bruce ever goes back in the studio and out on tour (which I hope is rather sooner than later!) then Max will no doubt be sitting behind the drums for Bruce Springsteen and his "E-Street Band".
