Tips and Tricks

Each week we add a little tip to assist you in your web building. Some of the things you already know and sometimes you will come across a thing or two that you wanted but did not know where to find it. This week we will feature
"Having Check Boxes And Radio Buttons Appear Pre-Selected"

Actually, this is a very easy to achieve. If we were to look at the two below "Selected" buttons, then the code for selected and unselected, it will become self evident on howto.

Checked
<INPUT type=checkbox checked name="?" value="?">

Unchecked
<INPUT type=checkbox name="?" value="?">

Checked
<INPUT type=radio name="?" checked value="?">

Unchecked
<INPUT type=radio name="?" value="?">

To make the button appear pre-selected, all you do as in the above example, add the attribute into the code of "checked" and it is done.

As you can notice in the above examples, the question mark character ? is being used. In a functioning form, these would be replaced with the names of each selection. This is one aspect that you need a good solid working knowledge of forms to better understand the theory behind the naming of form elements.

These buttons are 90% of the time associated with forms that you want your viewers to already have one or more selections already chosen.

You can also view this little tip, along with many more at the below link.

The Consigliere's™ Top Question

There is always one question that sticks out more than the rest. So what we have decided to do is post the top question of the week and show you how we answer it. If you feel you would like to add to the answer feel free to contact us with your input on the question.

Question
I have noticed on somes site I visit a really nice effect that I can't seem to figure out. The effect is the hi-lighting of specific areas of text in different colors to make a "Statement" so to speak. How is this done?
Signed:
     Hi-Lighted In Hanoi

Answer
This is what you call "Cascading Style Sheets" or CSS for short. This effect and numerous others are not supported by all browsers. We have tested the effect you are seeking and it supported in IE5.5, IE6.0, Netscape4.08 and Netscape7.0.

Just add this little code around the text you want
hi-lighted and reconfigure the colors you want.

<font style="background-color: #1e90ff;
color: #ff0000; font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold;">
Put Some Text Here </font>

As you can notice in the above code, all the color coded areas can be reconfigured. The only one not self-explained is the bold. This can be replaced with the word "normal" and the text would look like the below.

This has a normal font-weight attribute .

This has a bold font-weight attribute .

Where Can I Find It?

David From Dunkirk Writes

Is there any way to get your Slide-In Menu to scroll down the page instead of staying stationary? When you scroll down you can no longer use the menu.

Thank You

This script persay does not have that option, but......... we have found one that should be what you want. We are in the process of designing a full tutorial on it and will be ready within a few days.

In the interim we have built a tutorial on this updated version that even has the ability to use graphics within the slide-in menu. This is a "Must See" menu. Just grab the below link and you are there.
