Shattered Dreams - Chapter 10

Adrienne sang christmas carols softly to herself as she cautiously took some warm Christmas cookies out of the oven. It was a few days until Christmas, so her and her friends decided to have a little get together, exchanging gifts and embelishing in the good-will spirit. Adrienne glanced down at her stomach, disbelief still floating in her mind. She sighed, placed the cookies on a cooling pan and went to answer the knocks at the door.

"Rina," Devon greeted her, hugging her firmly and stolling on in. Her red sweater covering her body merrily was given to her last year by Danny. "Cocoa!" she gasped as the little dauchsen came skidding across the floor.

"You never stop, do you, Rina?" Danny asked, the mouth-watering scents of baked goods flooding his nostrils.

"Of course not!" Adrienne replied with a smile, whiping her hands on her white and red apron. She closed the door and lead them to the livingroom.

"Isn't it glorious this time of year?" Devon mused, looking out the window at the glistening snow hugging rooftops and sidewalks. Reefs of red and green hung proudly on doors and lamposts.

"NYC is definatley the best place to live," Danny agreed, taking a load off and putting his feet up on the coffee table. Rina's presents for her friends rested on the table next to Danny's feet.

"This isn't your apartment, Danny," Rina yelled from the kitchen, placing the cookies on a red paper plate, "We behave like humans here."

"Well sorrrrrrrrry," Danny replied, throwing his feet off the table. "Is Chris going to make an appearence tonight?"

"I think he's going to try," Rina answered, bringing the cookies and a pitcher of milk to her friends, "It depends how late practice runs."

"Adrienne," Devon yelled excitedly, taking a present out of the yellow bag for her. It was a medium-size box wrapped in sparkily green paper with a red bow.

"Hold up, hold up," Rina replied, placing the cookies and milk on the coffee table and out of her wavering hands. Rina took it graceously, easing herself down on the couch. After a slight pain whispered through her back, she ripped off the paper. She opened the white box to reveal 4 candles. They smelled incredable and had different kinds of shell molded in the wax. "Mmmm," Adrienne sighed, sniffing the candles like an addict, "These smell so good. Thanks girl."

"You're very welcome," Devon replied with a smile, presenting Rina with a hug. Rina groaned slightly, her back experiencing pains again. "Take yours," Rina insisted, "it's the blue one."

Devon unwrapped the present like a hungry child devours food. It was a snowglobe of a little town. White flakes and glitter swam over the town freely. Devon's eyes lit up and she thanked Rina for the gift. "Open yours, Danny," Rina told him, shifting her weight achingly on the couch.

Danny took the long rectangle-shaped box in his hands. He shook it lightly, trying to figure out what it was. He then cleaved the wrapping paper and flipped the lid of the box with one hand, the other feeding his face with cookies. A gasp escaped his lips. There was an authentic New York Knicks basketball jersey with the name 'Danny Disaster' and the number '83' on the back. "This is...wow, thanks so much," Danny told her, his voice stolen by Rina's kindness. Rina only smiled back. "My gift's nothing compared this..." Danny told her, handing her a long box across the table.

"I'm sure I'll love it," Rina assured him, her eyes flowing all over the gift. Her pudgey hands tore off the wrapping paper. She peered through the white tissue paper, a huge smile shining on her face. Laying there was a little blue 'Pooh' overall set with a white shirt small enought to dress a doll. "Danny...this is so thoughtful...my baby's first outfit," Rina laughed, holding back tears of joy.

"Anything for you, Rina," Danny replied, his eyes glowing with relief.

Danny and Devon has just went back to their apartment when Adrienne layed on the couch, her head pounding rashly. There was another knock at the door. "Ugh," Adrienne whispered, being belted out of sleep. "I'm lazy...Come in!" she shouted. Chris crept on in, his cheeks red from the cold, his hair frosted from the flying snow. He held a small box under his left arm. "Chris," she smiled, slowly scurrying to her feet. "Gotta be honest, your gift is in my mom's car, waiting to be wrapped...I didn't think you'd show..."

"It's Christmas," Chris replied, swinging his arms out. His hazle eyes radiated some energy into Adrienne. "I can only stay for a few, but I had to give you your present."

"Alright," Rina replied skeptically, accepting the small box from Chris. They both sat on the couch. Chris munched away on cookies as Adrienne unwrapped the package, lying her legs on Chris's lap. The paper hid a silver picture frame with 4 slots in it. Words like 'Friends Forever' and 'Memories' were imprinted all around. Four pictures occupied those slots; an old picture of Rina and Chris holding a more spirited Cocoa, a picture of Rina, Devon and Chris dancing around with giant sunglasses on during the summer of '93, a picture of Chris and Adrienne sitting at the park in '97 and a group pic of Devon, Danny, Chris and Adrienne last year during Christmas. "This is great," Rina gasped, running her fingers over the frame. She loved sentimental gifts. She glanced up, smiled and glance back down at the marvelous frame. "I love it."

"I'm glad you do," Chris replied, placing a tender kiss on Rina's right cheek. "I don't want you to forget the memories..."
