Rina slammed the phone on her dresser after the failed 5th call she placed to Chris. Her teeth were almost grinding at her anger; pain sizziling in her head, mouth, and back. She wanted to talk to him, to apologieze, but doing it over the phone wasn't right. Cocoa scampered into her room and scratched at her ankles. Rina looked down at her leggins, her anger deteriorating and picked Cocoa up in her arms tenderly. Her room was dark, the way she liked it, the way she felt; dark, cold and alone. They both sat down on the bed, sad and fustrated.
There were a few light knocks on the door and Cindy slipped in, her mouth in a tired smile. Her eyes flickered with consern as Rina looked up at her, her eyes sadder than a mourning daughter. "What's wrong, honey?"
"Chris and I are in a fight," Rina told her, her fingers lingering sweetly between Cocoa's ears, "It was stupid on my part, really dumb. He hasn't returned any of my calls..."
"Well, he's waiting for you in the living room," Cindy informed her. Cindy's small, skinny body greased out of the room like mail sliding through the mailslot.
Rina's icy composure melted into one of relief. She darted from her bed, Cocoa barking at her lighting speed, fumbling through the closet for her black coat. She grabbed it, took in a long, deep breath, and opened the door slowly.
Chris turned to her, his eyes locked intensely on her as she walked embarassed to his side on the couch. He put is arm behind her along the couch, waiting for an explanation.
"I'm sorry," Rina started, resting her hands on her knees which were appearing smaller and smaller as her stomach grew. "I was really stupid, immature, mean, selfish..."
"Go on," Chris urged, a cresent appearing on his face. They both shared in a laugh.
"I mean, everyone in my class had their boyfriend leave them, whether right away or in the long run. I was just scared you'd do the same..."
"Friends forever," Chris whispered, a golden finger perched against Rina's frosty lips. "I was really upset that day and days afterward. Then I realized I didn't want to spoil such a great friendship because of that fight. I do love you though, Ri. If the feeling isn't mutual, I will wait or deal with it."
"I appreciate that, Chris," Rina said through his finger with a relieved smile, her hands linking onto his grey long-sleeved shirt. "Time will tell everything, I guess." Chris nodded and shoved her into his arms.
Cindy couldn't help but watch in awe. Those two were special, alright. "Adrienne?" Cindy spoke up, placing some fresh carnations in a crystal vase. "Is Chris coming with us to the doctors today?"
Rina looked back a Chris, a glimmer of please diffusing onto her face. Chris smiled at her and replied with, "Yeah, I'll come."
"Dr. Jing, This is Chris," Rina introduced them. Chris held out his hand and Dr. Jing took it and smiled.
"I'm the Daddy," Chris admitted proudly. Sun began to beam from Rina smile as Dr. Jing chuckled.
"Nice of you to join us, Chris," Dr. Jing replied, scurrying over to this machine standing in the corner. "This machine is an Ultrasound scan. We're going to see your baby more in depth, check it's heart rate and amniotic fluid, see that its heart, liver, kidneys are developing properly." She lead Rina to the cold tan dentist chair, her hand clenching Chris's as Dr. Jing heavily wheeled the machine over. Dr. Jing took this tube that looked like a vacuum hose and lowered it to Rina's body. "Just relax," Dr. Jing told Rina, tapping her hand comfortly. Rina nooded as Dr. Jing slowly sailed the tube up and down her stagnant wave of stomach then held it in a spot just over her belly-button. On the machine screen, a wondrous image appeared.
Chris and Rina's breath was clutched by amazement as a little body leisurely wiggled in the screen. Its head, arms and legs were outlined in scratchy black and white lines. Red, blue and orange signafied its tiny, brave heart. Rina couldn't comprehend how such a tiny child has been living inside her, a child herself. Chris squeezed Rina's hand, his face lighting up as his finger grazed the screen making sure it was real.
"Do you want to know the gender of your child?" Dr. Jing asked with a smile, taking down some measurements.
"Yes," Rina gushed, quickly glancing over her left shoulder at Chris happily.
"Are you sure you really want to know?" Cindy ask concerned from the chair across the room, raising her eyes over the magazine's horizon.
Rina peered up at Chris again. He deliberated for a moment, his eyes concentrating on the back wall. "Yeah," Chris finally said, his smiling eyes connecting with Rina's.
Dr. Jing moved the tube a little to the left and scrutinized the screen carefully. "It's a girl," Dr. Jing reported, "Congraduations."
"Oh my God," Chris whispered, tears tearing up his eyes. He bent down and hugged Rina, who was hysterical with joy, gently.
"A girl," Rina repeated with astonishment. Cindy took a few strides from her chair to join the rejoycing couple.
Cindy's kiss lightly whisked over Chris's cheek and Adrienne's cheek in congradulation. She leaned on Chris's shoulder, still gazing at the screen. "What do you guys want to name her?"
"Well," Chris started, looking down upon Adrienne. So many names were driving through his mind. "We never thought about that..."
The perfect name dawned on her. "Angelina," Rina whispered, petting Chris's hand as her eyes were hypnotized to the screen. "I like Angelina...because she'll be our angel."
"I like it, too," Chris agreed after quick deliberation. A kiss of a father was rested upon Rina's cheek as everyone looked at the monitor. The day became brighter, the rain became lighter, the oceans became wider to the friends. Is this Golden Age going to last for a momentous life or fold and come ripping down like a house of cards...cards of fate?
