Shattered Dreams - Chapter 7

"Rina," Devon yelled to her front door, knocking loud enough to shake the heavens. "RINA!" She shouted once more before she ajared the always unlocked tan door. The apartment was silent, the only sound echoing off the walls was the creeping wind from an opened window. Devon crepted through the aparment, looking around until she saw the wagging tail of Cocoa poking out of Adrienne's door. She walked over to the door and knocked lightly.

"Come in," Rina whispered, holding a blue plush teddy bear to her body. She was rocking a little on her bed and staring without emtion at the floor, just thinking and thinking. Devon sighed and sat next to her softly on the bed. "I'm not going to cry," Adrienne informed her, her eyes frosted with fear.

"I know," Devon replied simpathetically, brushing Rina's curly hair comfortly with her fingers. The silence was deafning and Devon knew no words needed to be expressed on how Adrienne felt. "When are you going to tell your parents?"

"Tomorrow Night," Rina replied softly, her eyes directing to Devon. "I'm going to do it with or without Chris."

"Good," Devon replied, embracing her friend in a hug. Rina sniffed back the tears, clinging onto her friend for dear life. "Isn't Nate coming home tomorrow afternoon?"

"Oh, yeah," Rina responded, the thought almost falling from her mind. "This is going to be fun." Devon nodded slightly as Cocoa stratched at her ankle. They let each other go and Devon looked over the bed carefully. "Hey hansome," Devon greeted Cocoa, picking up the hot dog lovingly in her arms. Cocoa's tail whipped back and forth as if on auto pilot and his tounge licked Devon's face clean. Devon giggled slighty, wipping the slobber from her tan face and Adrienne smile appeared onto her face. Her ceiling fan cut throught the air with a whooshing sound as Adrienne tossed the teddy bear into her black bean bag chair and ran her hands nervously through her hair. Cocoa leaped from Devon's arms and started to run laps around the apartment.

"Well, those pants are stylin'," Devon joked, referring to the black sweatpants that clung to Adrienne's legs like a scared toddler. "I wonder why they haven't expected anything with your fallen style."

"Funny," Adrienne laughed, chucking a blue pillow at her friend's head. Adrienne looked out of the portal of her room and Chris came into view. A shiver shot through her body as he approached, his hands lost deep in his grey pants' pockets. He bit his lip embarassed and surfaced his left hand to scratch the side of his head. Sympathy and apology glazed his eyes as Cocoa barked excitely at Chris. Chris glanced down, smiled, and cautiously crept to the door.

"The door was open," Chris told them quietly as he leaned against the doorframe, thrusting his thumb in the direction of the opened door. Devon's eyes flipped from Rina to Chris then back to Rina.

"I think I better leave you two alone," Devon informed them, standing up to leave.

"No," Rina curtly replied, grasping Devon's hand. "Please stay." Devon nodded with a smile and took a seat on the wooden floor.

"I'm sorry," Chris gushed, walking slowly into the room. Rina's glare grew more intense as Chris sat on the far end of her twin bed. "I don't know what came over me..."

"That makes two of us," Rina replied followed by rolling eyes as she folded her arms.

"Please, Ri," Chris begged dryly, "Let me finished." Rina nodded unwillingly, leaning her back up against the wall and resting her hands on her growing belly. "I was...I don't know...utterly suprised and angry and upset...and..." Rina and Devon witnessed in somewhat surprise, Chris's tears inching into his gorgeous eyes. He brushed at them violently and continued. "I didn't know what to do...or how to react. I'm so sorry...I never meant to get you into such a mess. You're almost like a sister to me, Rina. I would never hurt you, you know that...and...I'm sorry for the way I acted...I was just terrified..." His hands covered his eyes as he tried to force his mouth from not frowning. His face was overtaken by sadness and tears. A sob leaked from his lips as Adrienne crawled across the bed to his side. She wrapped her arms around him as he leaned his head on her shoulder. Their breath mixed together in sorrow as Devon scurried over to their side. She placed her hands over Chris's and Adrienne's icy hands and looked down with a small smile.

Rina forgave him right then and there. It takes a real man to admit his faults. "It's OK," Rina assured Chris, tapping his cheek lovingly. "I was scared, too. I can't do this alone. I'm not that strong...I'm telling my parents and Nate tomorrow. Will you be with me?"

Chris's eyes traveled to hers in a sparatic pattern as if lost in a dream. He let go of her and leaned over in thought, looking at the floor. As he peered down, his eyes lit up and a smile appeared as magic on his face. "Yeah," Chris replied, whipping his head to Adrienne and Devon. "I will."
