Rites of blasphemy
Contrary to popular stereotype, rites of blasphemy are not central to most forms of Satanism. Some Satanists do not practice them at all. However, occasional rites of blasphemy can be very beneficial, especially for people plagued by irrational fears and guilt feelings leftover from their upbringing, as explained in the first article listed below. And, for new Satanists in general, I recommend a rite of blasphemy as part of self-initiation.
- The purpose of blasphemy in Satanism
- The Black Mass
- For ex-Christians: Renunciation (Much simpler than a Black Mass, and more to the point for ex-fundies. If you're an ex-fundy but not a Satanist, you might perhaps be interested in the section on Non-Satanist variants of the rite.)
- The cautious truth-seeker's blasphemy rite and self-baptism - an alternative for people who, for whatever reason, do not want to perform the more classic blasphemy rites.

- Off site: Atheists bond during 'de-baptism': Nonbelievers say they need to show their numbers by Sarah Pulliam, Columbus Dispatch, Sunday, August 3, 2008. Light-hearted rite by a (non-Satanist) group of atheists. (See also Scenes from an Atheist De-Baptism Ceremony on the Friendly Atheist blog, August 4th, 2008, another copy on the Cleveland Freethinkers Blog. The rite may have been inspired by the following satirical story: Naked Spears Mum as Rabbi Reverses Mormon Baptism of Dead Jews by Chris Hanson, The Spoof, 05 November 2006.)
Note: Although I do see rites of blasphemy as serving a valid purpose, I do NOT recommend church vandalism/desecration or any other such crimes against Christians or their property. (See The purpose of blasphemy in Satanism for an explanation.)
