To avoid self-deception in one's spiritual practices, it is essential to have at least some understanding of how the human mind works. In addition to specific, especially relevant psychological topics such as hypnosis, I would also recommend at least some very basic study of psychology in general. If you haven't taken a college course in psychology, I would suggest reading the free online textbook below:
