Chapter Twenty-Six
AJ opened the door when she rang the bell and greeted him with a half smile.
Uh-oh. What happened? He asked, pulling the door open all the way and she
stepped inside.
Nothing. My brother left.
Awww, Im sorry. He murmered sympathetically, giving her a one-armed hug.
I was just about to fix some coffee, you want?
Sure. Thanks. She followed him into the kitchen and took a seat on one of the
stools by the island.
So where is the Infamous Frowning Blonde? She inquired, noticing the stillness of
the house.
He is downstairs, actually, watching Memento. I swear, hes seen that movie so
many times, Im suspicious. Hes probably in love with Guy Pierces chest
too.(*hehehe*) AJ chuckled, turning to pour the coffee into two mugs.
*****The Following Night*****
The night and its lonliness had found her with Jeff and as they sat, through
dinner, through another viewing of Conspiracy Theory, she could sense their slight
awkwardness with one another. Fixing cups of tea and coffee, they sat out back by
the edge of the lit pool, sipping silently and she, wondering why she was with him
here and not some other person.
So, any big movies on the agenda? He tried for conversation.
Hmmm...Nope, not any right now.
I see... He nodded and became focused on the crystal water.
You should come with me to my summer house for a weekend. He said suddenly,
turning to look at her.
Should I? She mused, caught off guard.
Yeah, itd be like old times. He answered easily, tossing a grin at her.
Sounds nice.
Itd be fun, He stated, leaning back on his elbows on the concrete of the poolside.
Tell me something, Nat, whyd you and Mr. Handsome ever break up? She rolled
her eyes at her friends nickname for the infamous ex, Aidan.
It didnt work out. She replied shortly, setting her mug down next to her and
leaning back also, facing up at the star-spotted sky and away from his curious eyes.
Yeah? I never did like him...
I remember.
...Why did you ever date him in the first place anyways?
Because he was cuter than you, She laughed at the face he made.
Its gorgeous tonight. She commented as a breeze passed by and looked over at
him when he was quiet.
Whats wrong? She asked, studying his tanned face.
Ah, nothing, He shrugged and smiled.
Why did you bring Aidan up?
Just curious. Besides, I saw him at the mall the other night and I he kinda stuck
in my mind.
I hate him.
Me too. He agreed, following her gaze up.
I do believe weve ran out of things to talk about tonight, He finally said a few
minutes later.
Wanna watch another movie? She offered, looking at him with hopeful eyes.
Only if you want me to stay? She grinned and got up, leading the way into the
house...
