***** Nick opened his eyes slowly, each eyelid weighing about a hundred pounds. He felt dizzy for a second before the pain hit him. He moaned aloud and squinted, trying to make out the figures moving around in the room. For a second, Morgan came into view before she was ushered out of the room by what he assumed was a nurse. He tried to tell her not to leave but felt completly drained of energy. All he wanted to do was sleep. “ Nick? Nick, I’m Nurse Margo,” He heard the voice but it sounded afar and he didn’t feel like responding. He closed his eyes again and felt the sleep wash over him. “ Nick?-...He’s sleeping again,” Nurse Margo said, watching the heart monitor. “ It’s about time, it’s been three days,” Gabrial muttered, watching his face. He looked over at Morgan, wondering if he should ask if there wasn’t something going on with them. She looked tired but now there was a hopeful look on her face. “ Do you know when he’s going to wake up?” She asked, looking at the nurse. “ Probably by tonight,” She answered, giving Mor a reassuring smile. “ You should get home and get some sleep, Morgan,” Gabe said to her, taking in the bags under her eyes again. She looked at the clock and contemplated. “ I’ll watch Amelia, if you want?” He offered and she shook her head. “ I’ll just go to my Mom’s,” Gabrial nodded and stood up with her. “ Call me if he wakes up?” She asked Gabrial and he nodded again. “ Don’t worry about dropping me off, Gabe. I’ll just take a taxi or something,” “ That’s gonna be expensive, it’s a long drive,” He commented, moving to put on his jacket. “ It’s ok, I’ll be fine...I’ll see you later, ok?” She gave him a kiss on his cheek and picked up Amelia’s babyseat...
***** Nick watched the clock’s hands slowly move until it was finally a decent time to call her. It wasn’t even six yet but he needed to see Morgan. He reached over to pick up the phone and dialed the number he had locked in his mind. He was about to hang up when a groggy voice picked up the phone. “ Hello?” “ Mor?-” “ Nick? You’re up?” She piped, the sleep vanishing from her voice. “ Um...Yeah...Mor, I need to see you and Amelia,” He said softly. Caution and doubt filled her. “ Why?” There was a pause before he answered, his voice firm but his heart faltering. “ We need to talk,” He waited for her to say something. “ When can I come?” She asked, her words seemingly flat. “ Whenever...Right now would seem like a good time. No one’s over,” “ I’ll see you in a little while then,” She said before hanging up. Nick listened to the dial tone for a few seconds as his eyes blurred with tears. He sighed before replacing the phone in it’s cradle. He leaned back, sitting in the darkness as he waited for Morgan. She showed up twenty minutes later, alone. Her face was unreadable as she looked over him before taking a seat in the chair next to the bed, almost reluctantly. “ Mor...I’m not the one for you,” Was the first thing he said, breaking the silence that had gained hold of the room. She stayed silent, her gaze focused somewhere above Nick’s head. “ Morgan, I did some thinking that day. I drove around for a good while, just thinking everything through,” He swallowed and closed his eyes briefly. “ Where’s Amelia?” His words were slightly sharp and she met his eyes for a second. “ I left her with a friend,” Morgan said quietly, tearing his heart apart to even smaller shreds. He sighed, wanting to just be with her but knowing deep down inside that this was the right thing to do. “ Can you please say something?” He asked, getting frustrated with himself and with her. “ Why? Why are you leaving?” She asked finally and Nick looked at her, wishing she would just look him straight in the eyes but when she lowered them to his, he was the one who looked away. “ It would never work out,” “ Those were my words, remember? You were the one who knew it’d be ok for us all along, Nick,” Her eyes blurred with tears he didn’t want to see and her voice clouded with emotions he didn’t want to hear. “ I’m not the one you need, Morgan...You can do better, I swear you can.” “ Why are you telling me this? How do you know it’s not you the one I need? What makes you such a bad candidate?” “ Because...Morgan, you don’t know me very well-” “ Which is why I want us to be together. Nick, we have a daughter. We can learn along the way. You can’t tear apart your daughter’s life,” “ Morgan, I can’t stay.” He expected her to say something else to convince him to stay but instead, she stood up. “ If you’re sure...” He nodded and something changed in her eyes. “ I’m so sick of being the one to plead in this situation,” She said, a tear gliding down her face. She swiped at it before looking at Nick. She turned and pulled her coat back on and hesitated before walking out of the hospital room...
Once again we sit in silence, After all is said and done, Only emptiness inside us, Baby look at what we’ve become, We can make a million promises but we still won’t change, It isn’t right to stay together when we only bring each other pain, I don’t wanna cry, Don’t wanna cry, Nothing in the world can take us back to what we used to be, The giving you my heart and soul, I must find a way of letting go, Cause baby, I don’t wanna cry, Too far apart to reach the distance, But something keeps us hanging on, Pretending not to know the difference, Denying what we had is gone, Every moment we’re together is breaking me down, I know we swore it was forever but it just hurts too much to stay around, I don’t wanna cry, Don’t wanna cry, Nothing in the world can take us back to what we used to be...
