***** Jake watched Morgan uncertainly as they sat at dinner with Angie and Todd at their house. She was extremely quiet as they made small talk about the snow storm which had prevented all of them from coming home the normal time. Instead, they had finally showed up at nine thirty when they usually got out around six. Amelia started crying again and Morgan glanced over at her before she stood up and picked Amelia up out of the baby booster seat. “ Why are you so fussy today?” She muttered, rocking Amelia and trying to soothe her. “ Why do you pick her up every time she cries, Mor? You’re spoiling her,” Jake said, helping himself to the carrots. “ Because she is a baby,” Morgan replied deliberatly, angry at him for some reason. “ Well, I know, but-” “ Jake, I am her mother. Until you move in, you have no right to tell me how to raise my child,” Morgan snapped and Jake cleared his throat. “ Morgan, right now isn’t the best time to bring that up,” “ Well when is? You work all day and I barely see you at night,” She fumed and walked to the living room. Jake silently put down his napkin before pushing his chair back and following her. “ Morgan, what is your problem?” He demanded, thinking about the whole past week. “ Nothing,” She muttered, settling down on an easy chair and turning on the tv to distract Amelia. “ Bullshit. If you are mad at me for something, I would really like to know what it’s about,” “ I am not mad, I just wish you wouldn’t tell me how to take care of Lia if we don’t even live together,” “ Morgan, how many times do we have to go through this? I’ve asked you to move in with me,” “ I don’t want to move,” “ Well then you’re being unfair if you want me to move and you stay where you are,” “ A good dad would,” She snapped icily. “ Don’t even start about good dad’s, Morgan. I’m doing the best I can and I know for sure that’s better than what her real father is doing,” Her eyes flashed at him as she glared. “ How dare you say anything like that!” She raised her voice and he sighed. “ I don’t understand you, Morgan. You don’t want to get married, you don’t want to move in with me. Are you still living in the fantasy that your ex’ll come back?” “ Jake-” “ Is it Gabrial you still want? Tell me Morgan so I can just move on with my life. Because right now it seems like all you’re doing is using me to play father to your child. I mean, do you even care about me?” “ Of course I do-” “ That’s always the same answer. Is there another guy, Morgan?” He asked, his voice quiet. “ Another-? Jake, there isn’t another guy!” “ Are you sure? You have the scent of men’s cologne on you. Other than mine or Todd’s,” “ Oh, and that’s enough reason for you to accuse me of cheating on you? You are pushing it, Jake!” “ Morgan, I love you and I would give my life up in a second if it would guarantee your happiness. What do you want me to do? Pretend that things are great and that I don’t see in your eyes that something’s wrong? That all the little things that made this relationship so great are still here? Do you realize that we haven’t even kissed today? Tell me what’s wrong. Tell me if your feelings for me still exist,” “ Of course they do-...” She stopped, her eyes welling up with tears for what seemed like the hundreth time that day. “ Jake, I’m tired. I really don’t want to discuss this any further, Ok?” He nodded silently and glanced at his watch. “ I should be heading back now,” He said, picking up his jacket from the side of the couch. “ Will I see you tommorow?” “ I don’t know. I think we both need some time away from each other.” He reached down and kissed her on the cheek. “ I’ll call you tomorrow night, all right?” “ Get home safe,” She murmered, too exhausted of the day’s events too manage a proper goodbye. She watched him leave and almost at the same time the door shut, Amelia started crying again. “ Oh, come on, Baby. Not now,” She complained, rocking her gently again. The room fell into silence again and Morgan leaned back, letting the whole surrounding drift her towards sleep. “ Mor? Someone’s on the phone for you,” Todd’s voice floated to her and she opened her eyes. “ Who?” “ I dunno,” He shrugged and she stood up. “ Hello?” “ It’s me,” “ Nick? You made it home safely?” “ Yeah. Listen, I figured we needed to talk so how about we meet at a coffeeshop or something tomorrow?” Morgan paused. “ Why not here?” “ Because nothing sexual could happen in a coffeeshop,” He stated and Morgan winced at how sharp his voice sounded. “ Ok. Fine. What time? And where?” “ I don’t know where. How about I take a cab to your place around noon? We can decide when I get there.” “ Allright. That sounds ok,” “ Then I’ll be seeing you.” He hung up without waiting for her to say anything and she guiltly hung up, anticipating the next day’s ordeals...
