~GUILT~
(Footprints Ministry Newsletter ~ September/October 2004)

This poem is written by Mitch Carmody (www.heartlightstudio.net) who presented it at the 2004 National Gathering of Bereaved Parents USA.  He says, "There seems to be no shortage of guilt in child loss.  We failed to protect our children from death.  We feel guilty for saying things and not saying things...We even feel quilty for not feeling guilty."  Mitch lost his young son to cancer.

I wish I could have saved his life
Some how it must be my fault
I wish I could go back in time
I wish the quilt would halt.

I should have spent more quality time
Like "Cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and
The man in the moon."

When are you coming home Daddy?
Don't know when
But we'll get together then Dad?
And we'll have a good time then...

As the Harry Chapin song says,
Time moves on so fast
And we miss so much
As tomorrow becomes the past.

I should have done more with them,
Bought them the things they wanted and needed
I did not listen so many times
And now my time is cheated.

I lament over what we should have done
Instead of singing the songs of what we did
I feel guilt for not saying what was in my heart
And the emotions I sometimes hid.

There is no crystal ball
That can tell us who will die
Sometimes death takes our children
And we shall always ask the question, Why?

We never spend the time how we want to
Dishes still need to be washed, the trash taken out
Our lives are full of living
We shall always have our doubts.

Uncertain if we did the best
Did we spend enough time together
Guilty for waht we did or did not say
We should have talked less about the weather.

The "if onlys" just pull us down
And foster those feelings of remorse
We should acknowledge our shortcomings
As part of life's course.

Love supersedes all guilt
And restores faith back in our soul
That we know we did the best we could
With any given goal.

The love for our children can not be denied
And maybe we made some mistakes
We are only human, we get tired, fumble sometimes
And just have rotten breaks

We are not perfect
We knew that from the start
Let go of the guilt and blame
It belongs not in your heart.

If we learn anything from our loss
It's how we live today
Treat every moment as precious as gold
And say waht you need to say.

Celebrate your victories
Concentrate on the now
Know your child has no remorse
For what you did an how.

They will love us always
No matter what we did or did not do
And just knowing that one fact
Will always get us through.
