~THE
CROSS~
I was driving
down the highway
When I came
upon the cross
Marked with
a white ribbon
With a name
embossed
Only sixteen
years old
The night
the accident came
I thought
about the parents
Of the child
who died that day
I happened
to notice
More crosses
as I drove
One stood
alone
On a lonely
old road
I thought about
how many
Of the crosses
there are
How many lives
are taken
It just doesn't
seem fair
Innocent kids
On their way
back home
From a party
or a friend's
When the angels
called them home
I thought about
the speeders
Who don't
stop and think
About getting
high on drugs
Or having
too much to drink
Taking innocent
lives
Leaving crosses
by the road
Leaving parents
to deal with
A much too
heavy load
Whenever you
see a cross
Along some
highway as you drive today
Stop and think
about the innocent
And how their
life was taken away
In memory of
all those whose lives were taken on a highway
