The decade of the 1980s brought several changes to James E. Allen--Dix Hills. Here are some of them:
- The school colors changes from red, white, and black to blue and gold.
- Student enrollment declined from the 700 to 800 range in the 1970s to just around 400 by 1987.
- Classrooms that were half-hexagons in the 1970s had their dividing walls removed and became full-hexagon classrooms.
- There were many learning disabled, conduct problem, and hearing impaired students, but very few physically handicapped students, at JEA-Dix Hills during the years this author attended the school (1973 to 1978), but there were many more by 1987. However,I don't know how many physically handicapped pupils atttended JEA-Carman Road, Melville during the 1970s.
- Room 409, originally an art room, became the horticulture room with a greenhouse extension built onto one of its walls.
- The console cabinets in the 200s and 300s clusters were turned around so that their doors faced the classrooms instead of inward toward the play area (200s) and cafeteria (300s). Also, barrier wals were built around the play area and cafeteria.
- One of the restrooms in the 600s cluster became an office.
- Dividing walls were removed from some of the classrooms in the center of the 600s cluster to create a math lab.
