Football Uniform
History
Note: Much of the information contained here is based on my
viewing of several old copies of Sachem High School’s Invictus yearbook
at the Sachem Public Library.
Early 1960s
- The
helmet is solid metallic gold.
- Home
jersey is black with sewn-on tackle twill or satin old gold block numerals
on the front and back and gold-red-gold UCLA shoulder loop striping. The white away jersey has black numbers
and black-gold-black UCLA shoulder loop striping.
- The
pants worn with both jerseys were solid gold.
Circa 1963-
- The
helmet is still solid metallic gold
- The
black jersey, now short-sleeved, dispenses with shoulder and sleeve
striping. The gold numbers are now
round NCAA gothic style and are on the front, back and upper sleeves.
Circa 1968-?
- Sachem’s
football helmet is now black with a one-inch wide gold stripe running from
front to back.
- White
jersey has black rounded NCAA gothic style numerals on the front and back,
a black contrasting crew neck collar, and a trio of narrow black stripes
around each sleeve.
- The
pants worn with the white jerseys are black and have a one-and-a-half inch
wide old gold (or red) outseam stripe.
Gold web belts are worn with the pants.
- Socks
are white with a trio of narrow black stripes around the calf.
1971
- The
helmet is once again metallic old gold, but there is now a one-inch wide
black stripe running from front to back.
- Short-sleeved
black home jerseys have sewn-on gold block numerals on the front, back,
and upper sleeves, and contrasting gold rib-knit trim on the crew-neck
collar and sleeve end cuffs.
- Gold
pants now have narrow black-white-black side striping.
- Home
long hose are black with a trio of narrow gold stripes near the top.
- Sachem’s
white away jerseys are similar to those of the early 1960s, but now have
the word SACHEM in two-inch-high black full block letters above the jersey
front numbers.
1973
- The
gold helmet is replaced with a solid black helmet that has a metallic gold
“S” on each side.
- The home
jerseys are somewhat similar to those of 1971, but there are some
changes. I believe the numbers are
now screen-printed instead of sewn-on, and the
gold color is more of a deep yellow along the lines of Pantones
124, 1245, 125, 131, or 138. The
front and back numbers appear to be eight-inches high, and the TV numbers
riding atop the shoulders are four-inches high. The word “SACHEM” is in two-inch-high gold full block
letters above the jersey-front numbers, and there are solid gold rib-knit
cuffs.
- Pants
are in a yellow ochre gold color
with narrow black-white-black side striping.
- Black
home socks have two white stripes flanking a single one-inch gold stripe
with half-inch spacing between stripes.
- The
white away jersey does away with the UCLA shoulder loop stripes in favor
of narrow black-gold-black-gold-black striping on the sleeve-end rib-knit
cuffs. The word “SACHEM” is in two-inch high black full block letters
above the jersey-front numbers.
1975
- The
helmet logo changes to a black S inside a Kansas City Chiefs-style white
arrowhead. The helmet shell
remains black.
- Home
and away jerseys this season are unchanged from 1973.
- Gold
pants are replaced with white pants with narrow black-gold-black side
striping.
1977
- The
black jerseys undergo some changes.
The numbers and letters on the black home jerseys are now white
with gold edging; the word “SACHEM” on the jersey front is now in
three-inch high lettering, and sleeve-end rib-knit cuff striping is
replaced by two narrow outer gold stripes flanking two narrow inner white
stripes and hemmed sleeves.
- The
white away jerseys now have three narrow gold stripes alternating with two
wider black stripes around each sleeve, not unlike the 1970s away jerseys
of the NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals.
1980-Present
- The
black home jersey sleeve striping changes to the format of the 1977 away
jerseys: three thin gold stripes flank two wider white stripes.
- The
striping on the white pants becomes a bit wider.
- There
would be no further major changes in Sachem’s football uniform design
after 1980. However, starting in
the 1990s, the football team would occasionally wear for away games black
pants with gold-white-black-white-gold side striping.
