Football Uniform
History
Late 1940s
I happened to find a South Huntington High School yearbook
from the late-1940s at the South Huntington Public Library. In that yearbook was a team photo of South
Huntington’s football team wearing maroon long-sleeved jerseys with small white
numbers on the front and contrasting white shoulders. The pants were probably either solid white, maroon, or army tan.
Late 1960s-Early 1970s
- The
helmets were white and featured a wide maroon vulcanized strip down the
center of the helmet from front to back.
- Maroon
home jerseys had white plain block numbers on the front and back and
contrasting white upper sleeve inserts containing maroon TV numbers. The white away jerseys have identical
graphics in reverse colors.
- The
white pants worn with both jerseys had a single narrow maroon stripe down
each side.
1973
The helmet is now plain white, but the rest of the uniform
is unchanged from 1969.
1974-1976
- The
white helmet now has a single narrow maroon stripe running from front to
back and a three-inch-high player’s number in the Karnak Bold Condensed
font on each side.
- Maroon
home jerseys and white pants are unchanged from past years.
- The
white road jersey, which is now in a nylon mesh fabric, dispenses with the
contrasting maroon upper sleeve insert and now has the word “WILDCATS” on
the front above the numbers. The
word “WILDCATS” is arranged in a radius arc on many jerseys, but on some
it is straight across. The numbers
now have yellow-gold borders.
1977
- The
white helmet now has two narrower maroon stripes flanking the one-inch
wide maroon center stripe.
- The
home jerseys are changed to a graphical style identical to that of the
1974 white jerseys, and the numbers on the maroon jerseys are white with
yellow-gold borders.
- The
white pants are unchanged from what had been worn since at least 1969.
1978-1980
- Whitman
changes to a maroon helmet with a white Clemson-style paw logo on each
side and white-maroon-gold-maroon-white center striping.
1981
- A
thin white circular outline is placed around the Clemson-style paw logo on
the helmet. Otherwise, the uniform
is unchanged from the late-1970s.
1983-1998
- From circa
1983 to 1987, the maroon helmet maintains the same striping as in the
1981, but the paw logo is replaced by a white player’s number on each
side. Stripes are gone from the
helmet by 1988.
- The
new home jerseys have the word “WILDCATS” removed from the front and two
narrow white stripes flanking a one-inch wide gold stripe on each
sleeve. These jerseys are in
Champion’s “Wolf Pack” design with a double-play mesh yoke running over
the top of the shoulders and sleeves from sleeve-end to sleeve-end and a
porthole mesh body. White away
jerseys have similar graphics in reverse colors.
- The
white pants continue to have just one narrow maroon stripe down each side
until the late 1980s, when a butting yellow-gold stripe is placed behind
the maroon stripe. Solid maroon
pants began to be worn for away games by the mid-1990s.
1999
The 1999 season produces a major design overhaul for
Whitman’s football uniform.
- The
solid maroon helmet has three-inch high white player’s numbers in the
Futura Bold Condensed font on each side.
- Sleeve
stripes are gone from the new home and away jerseys. The maroon home jerseys now have a
white paw logo on each sleeve, white full block numbers with deep
yellow-gold borders, and deep yellow-gold (perhaps Pantone 125?) V-neck
collar and rib-knit cuffs. The
white away jersey has similar graphics in reverse colors.
- Solid
maroon pants are usually worn with the new home jerseys, and solid white
pants with the away jerseys.
