February 28th-Mets at St. Louis (Jupiter, Florida)

St. Louis 5, Mets 2

The Mets dropped their 2002 Spring Opener vs. the Cardinals 5-2 behind the pitching of Dicky Gonzalez. Gonzalez gave up 3 runs, all in the fourth inning, on 4 hits including a solo homer by J.D. Drew and a pair of RBI singles. Though he was the only Met pitcher to pitch more than an inning, he was charged with the loss.

The Mets scored their two runs in the next half-inning. Vance Wilson had and RBI single and outfielder Tony Tarasco drove in one as well with a groundout. Roberto Alomar went hitless in two at-bats, while Jeromy Burnitz hit a pair of singles in his two. The only Met to play the whole game was John Valentin, who started at third base and moved to shortstop before the fifth inning.

Shawn Estes had a solid Mets debut, retiring the side in order in the first inning. On returning to the dugout, Bobby Valentine stopped him and whispered into his ear "I didn't think you'd look this good in a Met uniform. You pitch great in a Met uniform." After the game Valentine told reporters that Estes showed enough on his pitches to start the regular season today.

The Mets took advantage of the Spring training rule that requires teams to only bring four of their starting position players, letting Mike Piazza, Mo Vaughn, Edgardo Alfonzo, and Jay Payton stay in Port St. Lucie.

FINAL OUT: Both ex-New York Jets headcoach Bill Parcells and Yankee P.A. announcer Bob Sheppard were spotted at the game.
