USS Ranger, revenue cutter

Built in 1823, Ranger is typical of the American revenue cutters used for surveillance and coastguard duties during the first half of the 19th century. A large carronade that rotated a full 360 degrees permitting rapid fire from both sides of the hull with a single weapon. Note the particular elegant line of the Ranger, emphasized by the depth of the keel at the stern.
