The 6th Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Headquarters area

Bill Johnson states: This photo of 6/29-Camp Enari was taken after I left for the States but I'll give you as much as I can:

We (the CO, the Sergeant Major and I) proposed and designed a memorial to our slain comrades (approved by Div Hq) that each Battalion member could pass through on his way "home". It included a Torii (Japanese entrance gate to a shrine; that's the large wood structure you see in the photo), an hour-glass shaped pond and a memorial stone (Marker) with the inscription: "To Those Who Laid the Ultimate Sacrifice on the Altar of Freedom". Over the center of the hour-glass pond is an arched bridge. The Division Commander and his Staff attended the dedication of the memorial which occured just prior to my departure. The dedication included a 21 gun salute, which some may recall was actually 22 guns. Guess the guys felt that our fallen comrades deserved more than the President.

The tradition that was proposed, was for a departing comrade to be given his transfer orders (papers) by the Sergeant Major at the entrance to the memorial. Thence he would proceed to the Marker, salute, "Those Who Laid the Ultimate Sacrifice on the Altar of Freedom", cross the bridge (simulating the flight home) and pass through the Torii (putting the Orient in the past). Those attending his farewell could then shake his hand and a vehicle would take him to the air strip.

Unfortunately I was one of the first to rotate back to the states, (to attend General Staff College). The memorial wasn't complete and I have no idea how things were handled after I left. But I did initiate the tradition upon departure from Camp Enari. - "CAN DO" - Bill
